Only Good With Mates | 3.0 0 comments |
by imatramp from A Box, Essex, England | Mar 29, 2005 |
I am a marvel fan and as soon as I saw this I wanted to get it, mostly because I heard that you could choose your team which for me meant Nightcrawler and iceman with whoever was left XD In reality this is more of a co-op thing than I thought and even then it gets annoying when you are fighting and your mate legs it meaning you either teleport to them or you can't see yourself on the screen because you are too small...
.:: Graphics ::. The graphics are brillient, not quite realistic but it still has it's charms on me with some good effects (which this is really all about) and some excellent cut-scenes...
4.5
.:: Gameplay ::. The controls are easy to get the hang of and are the same from player to player with the only difference being in the powers, but really most of the time you will be attached to one character in the end anyway meaning you won't care about any others... The objectives are laid out simply and usually you do most without realising it because they appear so quickly, most of the fun is lost when after ages of being bored with one or two easy enemies you get a horde of people heading your way leaving you with no choice but either throwing them off ledges and getting bored but alive or just running to the next exit leaving many EXP and other items behind... It is fun to play overall though, but it doesn't really follow a lot of the storylines I have read getting me kinda confused with what is going on, luckily for me there is lots of side missions with previous things shown in the comics and series like Wolverines escape to the juggernuts attack on the mansion...
3.5
.:: Lifespan ::. The storymode lasts ages mostly because of the fact that you will spend most your time trying to find more tech bits so you can revive fallen party members as the CPU sucks at controlling people and also the fact that you will probably forgot to save at some point and die meaning you go all the way back to the last save instead of any autosaves or checkpoints... There is some squrimish battles to do in the danger room but they are not all that good unless you are really leveled up and it becomes a good fight with your powers...3.0
.:: Sounds ::. There is nothing really to talk about here, the only real sounds they put in are the sounds of punches that sound more like you are hitting a sack instead of a person or a can instead of a car... It can get really annoying as well with some of the voices as they sometimes just chime in over like it is proxitimy actived as I have cleared a level and gone back to save to still hear enemies satying they will kill me @_@1.0
.:: Overall ::. It is a good game for when you have some mates over but apart from that it can get boring quite quick and the novelty of some powers wears off when you realise you have to level them up loads before they look cool/do anything usefull...

THE GOOD: Good variety of playable X-Men characters. Excellent voiceovers/dialogue. A seemingly infinite amount of objects to destroy. Unique gameplay setup allows up to 4 player co-op play simultaneously. Unlockable art and original Marvel Comics covers for viewing. Good RPG-based character building system.THE BAD: Cutscene graphics look too cartoony. The fighting (except for boss battles) quickly gets repetitive. Puzzles aren't too complicated. Character combos aren't all that impressive. Some character dialogue quickly gets repetitive. Menus are complex. Short but frequent loading when accessing menus get annoying. SUMMARY: The latest entry into the X-Men franchise allows you to control up to 4 X-Men at a time in various missions against Magneto, Mystique, and other legendary X-Men villians. The story revolves around Allison, a young girl whose mutant powers have just begun to reveal themselves and now both the good guys and the bad guys want her for their own respective purposes. The graphics are very good except in the cutscenes, where close-up the characters appear a bit on the cartoonish side, more like they were just cut and pasted in the scene. They also lack details especially in their faces. Environments show excellent detail and the movie cutscenes are realistic-looking. The character voices are excellent and accurately reflect each character's personality, like Cyclops' slightly whiny leadership style and Wolverine's "let's go bub" aggressive style. There's a lot of star power behind the voices too, including the talents of Dee Baker, Cree Summer, Ed Asner, and His Royal Baldness Patrick Stewart, among others (sorry guys, but no Rebecca Romijn voice for Mystique). The enemies have their own dialogue too but it's minimal and quickly gets repetitive. Sound effects are realistic and excellent. Controls are fairly solid but it does take practice learning how to use each character's mutant powers. You can do combos with 2 or more characters but it's too much effort for too little reward. The big thing with gameplay is that you will not believe the amount of destructible objects there are. Although it's an important part of the game, it's just fun going around trashing everything in sight! There are puzzles to solve as well, but they're limited to finding the right character then using the correct Mutant power. Additionally, while you can play by yourself, the game allows up to 4 people to join in anytime during a game, each controlling their own character! There are also a handful of multiplayer versus options as well, which also allow players to control various villain characters like Mystique, Toad, & others. Overall, while it's clearly the best next-gen X-Men title yet, it does fall short of expectations despite some really nice features. X-Men fans will still have fun with this, as will anyone who just needs to blow off a little stress...as they can just take it out on everything in sight! Rent this first unless you're into the franchise. |

THE GOOD: This game is a tad different than other RPG's. I was reluctant to buy this game due to lack of hype about it, but I think I made the right choice when purchasing this game.
The characters were cell-shaded, so it's pretty cool the way they look, with vibrant colors.
The storyline is pretty well done, and the fact that you get to explore the mansion is pretty awesome to itself. Not to mention how you can awesome collect comic books in the game.
The variety of characters that you get to play as, is awesome astounding. You can switch it up, and change characters at save points, so that you are not stuck with the same team through-out the game.THE BAD: Well with the cell shading, it was also an excuse for the makers to not add much detail to the characters.
And the camera angles are hard to get used to.
That's about it... SUMMARY: This game is a pretty good buy for anyone that is either into RPG's or X-Men. Because it is an excellent combination of both, and further more, addicting. |
