In campaign mode, sometimes it can be difficult to know which response to give potential allies to get them to join your cause.
This is kind of a no-brainer, but make sure you save your game immediately before you attempt to conquer a land, then experiment with your responses, and if they don't join you right away, just reload your game and try again.
Sometimes, however, it may be necessary, or even advantageous to flop your first or second attempt to get to the real target ally, because you may get spell cards out of the conversation.
