One of D-Link's better products | 4.2 0 comments |
by surreality from Los Angeles | Feb 25, 2005 |
THE GOOD: Atheros Super-G chip, easy to configure, WPA, works great with high volume traffic, good range, new firmware (revision 2.42) addresses resetting issue.THE BAD: Previous firmware revisions caused the DI-624 to reset frequently, as described by previous user. 2.4Ghz phones tend to interfere with wireless signal but this is a problem with a number of other routers out there. SUMMARY: After numerous firmware revisions, D-Link has finally worked out the kinks. I've had this router for more than a year now and have run into my share of problems. It was constantly resetting and would have difficulty grabbing an IP address from the DSL modem. However, after I upgraded to firmware rev2.42 all my problems were resolved. It's been running flawlessly for months now. Throughput is excellent, router has never crashed or reset due to heavy loads. Wireless range is above average with stock antenna (approx 55ft in an apartment with numerous walls and obstructions using a Netgear WG511 PCMCIA notebook adapter). Replaced existing antenna with a Hawking Tech high-gain omni-directional antenna. Considerable increase in range. Features are numerous and plenty for most SOHO users. Currently hooked up to PC Desktop & PowerMAC G4 via Cat5; Addt'l PC Desktop & laptop via WiFi (4 Total). |

THE GOOD: Supports WPA, many options in firmware, doesn't look ugly, has Atheros Super-G chip.THE BAD: Resets all the time, resets when your neighbor's 2.4GHz phone rings, resets when you run PCFlank's Targa3 exploit test, resets when you run a search over eMule's KAD network, resets if you use Super-G 108MBPS mode too long, resets if you look at it wrong, resets if you even think about looking at it wrong. Way too unstable for file downloading or P2P. Is ok if you just need to surf the web... but I need more than that. SUMMARY: Unstable. |

DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G | 4.5 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Easy to setup. Very flexible. Fantastic speed and range. THE BAD: Documentation and online support could be better. SUMMARY: This was my first experience with wireless networking and routers. The DI-624 was up and running with its default broadband settings before I could even open the configuration routine through my WEB browser. I had some difficulty setting up my email though because I didn't know you had to use FQDN's (Fully Qualified Domain Names) or the IP addresses in your email software; "pop-server" and "smtp-server" alone won't cut it. The speed on my laptop is incredible - faster than my desktop and I haven't found anywhere in my house it doesn't work or even experiences a decrease in connection speeds. |
