ATI vs. NVIDIA Mid-range Graphics Card Roundup
- Neoseeker |
| Right now, one of the brightest gems of the new mid-range would be the 9600GT. Inexpensive 9600GT's are selling for as low as $145 right now, making them very attractive indeed. Take a look at our benchmarks and judge for yourself how much that extra performance is worth to you -- but for around $150, in all honesty these seem like very good deals, as you'll be able to play pretty much any game currently out today, at high details at a medium resolution (1680x1050 say), with a solid framerate. (One thing to keep in mind when going over the charts is that our sole 9600GT is an overclocked model, but most 9600GT's are capable of the Palit 9600GT Sonics' clock speeds, with a little bit of safe overclocking.)
The good news is that there isn't a horrible choice you could make, out of any of the cards in the new mid-range. Compared to the paucity of relative performance around the current $200 mark available this time last year, it is truly a cause for celebration that you can pick up a something for a reasonable price and be well-set to play any game that's out. This isn't always the case. |

ATI & NVIDIA Mid-range Graphics Card Roundup
- Tech Report |
| The EN8800GT TOP delivered the highest frame rates in our gaming tests thanks to Asus' factory overclocking. Although its custom cooler takes up two slots and isn't temperature-controlled, it actually maintained reasonably low noise levels at both idle under load. Throw in Company of Heroes and a respectable three-year warranty, and we have the makings of a possible Editor's Choice. Unfortunately, this particular card is incredibly scarce online. |

Overall we have to say that we're very impressed with the RV670 and Visiontek's Radeon HD 3870 video card. Finally ATI have come back hard against Nvidia and while they can't beat them at the very top they can more than compete with them in regards to price and performance. An HD 3870 should almost match a GeForce 8800 GT. The Visiontek HD 3870 512MB is available for around the price of $249 at most stores though you can find it for $245 through our price search engine. This puts it at about $20 cheaper than the cheapest GeForce 8800 GT 512MB card so it is price almost perfectly for the cost. We personally are just very glad to have AMD and ATI back in the game and Visiontek have done a good job with the card. As you can see from the benchmarks though some might be more interested in the 3850 Black Edition and we'll have a look at that card shortly. For now, a good job overall from Visiontek and from ATI.
All in all, while perhaps lacking just a little extra something that could have maybe pushed this card from 'great' to 'outstanding', the VisionTek HD 3870 is a very nice example of the HD 3870 family, and is recommended.
