| What's the best way to remove a heatsink from a video card? |
| ANSWER |
Heatsinks on videocards are usually glued onto the GPU core. The best method is to place the videocard into an antistatic bag and a ziplock bag then place it into the freezer. Let the card chill for roughly 45 minutes. The cold has the effect of making the glue brittle. Remove any plastic pins that may be holding the cooler down. Using the edge of a butter knife or some other piece of thin, sturdy metal, force the edge of the knife between the core and the heatsink and pry firmly but gently. Be sure to clean the residue off the top of the CPU. Do NOT use water or a strong solvent. Paper towel moistened with alcohol works well. Do not apply any sort of liquid directly onto the surface of the GPU.

holy shit
if i did what Tweaker is talking about my gpu heatsink would fall off during the heat up period
now you might think this a good thing until you notice that my vid card mounts w/ the heatsink facing down
so when the heatsink would fall off anything below my vid card would be damaged by the falling heatsink
your method would work great Tweaker but only in those systems where the vid card mounts w/ the heatsink facing up
for this FAQ the freezer method works great but can take awhile
to speed up the proccess take a cottonball w/some isopropyl alcohol in it (DO NOT USE acetone the vid card WILL soften and warp when you pull the card out of the freezer)
isopropyl alcohol cant be frozen by your freezer (unless you fill it w/ liquid nitrogen (i never want to eat anything you make for dinner) and isnt currosive to silicon
as the glue starts to freeze and becomes brittle isopropyl alcohol will lift the glue off the gpu
after you pull out your vid card just pull off the heatsink and wipe it down w/ the cottonball of isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining glue
and if there is still any on the gpu then wipe it away w/ a qtip that has been lighty dipped into some isopropyl alcohol
after removing all the glue then let your vid card return to room temp (if it already hasnt) before aplying anything thermal paste and another heatsink or other cooling devices |

| I actually found removing the retention clips first then heating up the gpu core by playing a game for 10 minutes then shutting down and gently wiggling the gpu heatsink till it comes off a better/safer way over the freezer method. |
