When adding an IDE device to my system the device fails to appear in windows or the bios.
    ANSWER

Generally this issue can be solved in a few ways.

If the device is a hard drive then chances are you need to format it for use. You can create a bootdisk and use fdisk and the format command to get the drive ready to run. To do this the drive will need to be the only one running on the system and will require it to be set as master.

For a cd/dvd based unit it may require another change. Often the drive will conflict with the primary hard drive and fail to be recognized. To correct this you'll need to unplug the failed unit from the system and change the jumper from MA to SL. The setup looks like this usually.

    CS SL MA

The change should get the device recognized and running. 2 Master drives cannot share the same cable in this situation just as 2 slaves can not share the same cable.
