I ordered my dual socket Tyan 5400 with 2 physical CPUs each QX9775 Quad core totall 48MB L2 cache and in total 96MB total L2 cache,

As a number cruncher for parametric solids , I also ordered 6x 4GB ECC2 DDR2 totally 24GB of ram.

I must say I am happy with it. In years End, I will change the CPUs to QX9900 from Intel and the rams up to 8x8GN=48GB (maximum of board support).

I am using Vista 64bit,

I have a 3.2 core duo AMD with an Nvidia card with 512 ram and 1Gb of memory and it runs everything i need it to (including the most recent games.
We are at the times where you cannot honestly say that you can totally notice much of a difference between the 2, if you can notice then you obviously have both and should stop your whining!!
Be happy with what youve got, it will be out dated in 6 months anyway.
For those who are looking to buy new, buy what you can afford, if your looking to a forum for advise on what to buy you WONT notice the difference!!

well, the intel pentium D 805 processor has 2.66ghz written on the box, but if you take a little look around in the bios you'll find it has a multiplier of x20 and a massive potentional for overclocking (about 4.1ghz last time i checked) and the best thing is: it's only £130!

I think right now Intel's fastest is the QX9770 and AMD's fastest is the Phenom 9600. The Intel chip is faster than the AMD.

There were no models given to say what the currnt fastest intel or AMD CPUs are.

I don't know much about computers but mine seems to be pretty fast. I just took it out of the box this year. I kept it boxed up and new for a number of years so that its price would increase.

The question is what CPU is fastest, not what programs will perform at certain speeds. Just answer the question in Mhz FFS. IS IT 3GHz? 3.02? why you gotta get all technical about something simple?

it doesnt matter what cpu you have, as long as you use microsoft windows of some sort, your pc will run slow, windows doesnt use your system resources for your personal programs games and what not, it uses it mostly for its self, while there are options of changing this, windows will never let your applications have the best of things... what about hard drive speeds, you can have the fastes cpu and your hard drive can work only so fast, 15000 rpm hard drives do exist, might want to hook a fan up to it though, as it gets as hot as my mossberg after 8 shots...then shit changes, differnt sockets for different processors, go and buy what you think is the fastes, then it will be out dated the next day and soon you want be able to upgrade with out buying a new motherboard, and soon cool games will come out and your graphics card will suck, and soon maybe even a new kind of agp slot will come out puttin you back furter into the out dated pc world...

im takin my compaq 5686(peace of crap) and shooting it up with my mossberg presauder(famous pistol grip shot gun) and the im going to toss intel pentiums slot ones and socket, all pentiums 1 - 4, a few celerons, and using em for target practice, as they all have overheated and died.. a few other flavers too...

The new IBM P6 processor at 4.7GHz is the worlds fastest non super cooled/specialist processor as of June 2007.

I think Power5 CPU is faster than any AMD or Intel.

To answer the question currently the 6000+X2 AMD is the fastest cpu of 2006 for the money by FAR. It clocks at the same FSB as the FX62 but is rated at 3.0ghz vs the 2.8ghz of the FX62. Intel what the the crap is that? Anyone running a real PC has AMD ,Intel just the copy cats trying to keep up. Currently the prices just dropped at newegg so $229 US dollars what a grab. I usually am a die hard fan of AMD, however this time around I could not find a decent AMas all the shops were only stocking Intel P4. So I went ahead and bought one.

My experience:
1: the Intel chip IS higher priced
2: On games such as: Sacred, WOW, Total war games (medeival, rome, etc) where video ram is a necesity I have found Intel to be significamtly slower (for you who said you cant see a difference... YOUR WRONG.)
3: I have also noticed recently with the new Intel chip that my pc has difficulties multitasking many things quickly and I have also noticed a slow down in times for games to load, processes to start, and boot up has also slowed down.

So in my opinion AMD is faster than Intel in the same Mhz chips (of course a 2.8 Intel is faster than a 1.8 AMD :) )
I will return to the shops to get a new AMD ASAP.

Everyone here is speaking indecisivialy. None of you people have a clue which is the best because each of you have your own opinion, and that is what it is, an opinion. AMD offers a premium product for a resonable price, while Intel offers a premium product for a reasonable price. AMD offers speeds overclockable to 3.2GHZ 1066MHZ Front Side Bus, Intel offers speeds overclockable to 4.4GHZ 1066MHZ Front Side Bus. Each one will only be as efficient as the Motherboard and the Memory that coinside with them. A board capable of 1066MHZ Bus, and DDR2-533 Memory capable of 1066MHZ. While also you must incorperate Serial ATA hard drives with Serial ATA DVD-RW's. PCI Express, as well as water cooling. Now this gets expensive. But the meaning is for the time being Intel is at the top of the speed and performance pyramid with their dual cores with the 4 meg cache and the quad core with its 8 meg of cache. AMD is only offering with it's FX series 2 meg of cache dual core. When they rold out the quad core's with 8 meg of cache then they will have my interest, and when they do that Intel will retiliate with a faster quad core that will break the 4GHZ barier and prices on the daul cores and quad cores will drops 30-60%. So the fact that the other company is out there and makes such a great product that people will get on the net and bash the other one with no idea of what they are saying, just proves that each company is just as supperior as the other, one just came up with something exciting first. and everyone will continue to switch back and forth from Intel to AMD as long as the other out does the competition.

My opinion is that if you want a fast processor, without getting stung for it, buy an AMD - look at a price list and see where the jump in price to the next one starts to get silly - then buy the one before! at the moment I would advise: AMD AM2 Athlon 64 Dual Core 4200 for £133 at Microdirect (on special offer!) - it will do everything you want from a processor without spending a fortune - then in a year's time upgrade - if you spend about the same amount of money again then you will always have a high end processor.

the alternative is spend £700 on a dual core FX62 and in 3 years time people will laugh at you cos your processor's shit!

Umm... Just how can you run Doom 3 on 4MB of memory? I don't think you could even run Doom 1 on that. Also, why wouldn't you get more memory than that, if you have such a fast processor? If you only have 4MB, a fast processor is kind of a waste.

You people do know that the AMD - x86 architecture was complitly rebuilt after lawsuites by Intel. Efectivly making not an Intel CPU. Also the AMD64 (x86-64) line of processors are a compleatly new type of processors that run compleatly differently than their Intel counterparts. Due to the fact that they use the HyperTransport technolgy that allows the two cpu chips to talk to each other directly, while Intel cpus are actually just two processors stuck together, and werent engineerd to do what they do. In fact each processor on an Intel chip has to have its own pin, while the amd chips shares its pins. And the fact that Intels new x86-64 are directly based on the AMD64 processors, and Intel pays amd for the use of the processors. And there are way more than two different architechtures on the market. PowerPC, x86, x86-64, and SPARC are amoung the top. Plus you also have inbeded systems, many which due run motorolla. And just because something is similar to something doesnt mean there the same. As I said, after lawsuites the amd processor line was compleatly rebuilt, and redesigned without the assitance of an Intel cpu. They have got there cpus to run the same arcitechture based on a compleatly different processor design. And lastly, AMD is just better, they run coller, faster, and are much cheaper. An added plus is that they run at a lower operateing frequncy with the same amount of gigaflops...

The AMD Athlon FX-60 shows the best benchmark results. Dual core technology will give an advantage in mulit threaded apps and games. I don't know how many multi threaded games are around yet

I just built a system around a Asus P5ld2 delexe mombo 1066FSB. I put in a P4 Extreme Edition, 1066FSB CPU. EE processors use HT and Dual core. I have 4MB of DDR2 667 memory.

This is the fastest system available without over clocking.

I can play Doom 3 and virus scan with system restore running in BG with out any hickups. (not that i would, just for testing)

Intel Extreme Edition CPU's is where its at.

i would say that buying the amd athlon 64 fx-57 would not be worth it, it ranges in prices dependin on where you go but some places its about $1500 for a very good processor wit ha good price i would stick with amd athlon x2 3800+ or something like that, as long as it isnt intel
