THE GOOD: The episodes of this first disc have a nice balance of action, drama and character development, which do well to draw the viewer in, and intrigue them to continue watching more of the series. The art style is extremely pleasant to watch, the animation quality is top notch, and the music (provided by Square Enix - who also provided music for the Final Fantasy games), is truly fantastic for the setting of a 1920's environment and the theme of alchemical prospects.THE BAD: The only aspect that prevents this first volume of the Fullmetal Alchemist from receiving a perfect 5, is the slow start. Although the first two episodes on this disc are exciting, and the third is incredibly moving and interesting, I found the fourth to be very boring, as the show begins to throw in odd filler episodes so the viewer can get to know the characters, and the world they live in. Episode 4 wasn't anywhere near as good as the first three, which is a real shame really. Some would also argue that the dubbing for the show really lets it down, and that the voices do not suit the awesome characters. The sub however can more than make up for it. SUMMARY: I would recommend Fullmetal Alchemist to anyone. The first three episodes alone are enough to more than satisfy most anime fans, but the fourth episode does let you down slightly; although hopefully it shouldn't put you off from purchasing the volumes thereafter. Fullmetal Alchemist has a rather slow start before the major stories, humour and action kick in, so you just have to ride it out, and be happy knowing that soon your wait will more than pay off...
Overall the first volume is a great introduction to a truly fantastic series on the whole. Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the most anticipated anime of the year for a reason, so make sure you don't miss out now that the show is reaching shores out of Japan...Go buy it right now!
