This is officially the best movie I've seen in a long time. I remember seeing the original when I was a little boy and it never really interested me that much. Probably due to the bad fx and being black and white. The story intrigued me but I just couldn't get into it.
Well thanks to Peter Jackson my interest in Kong has been restored.

Granted, there are some holes in the story such as how the hell they got Kong back to New York but all in all this is an all out adventure/action movie.

Usually I'd start a review explaining the story but it's King Kong, surely everyone knows how it goes?
Well in case you've been living under a rock for the last 20 years:

A movie maker (Jack Black) in the 1930s is close to losing his contract so he decides to throw caution to the wind and make a movie that will either destroy him or leave him a happy rich man.
He somehow came across a map which reveals the location of an Island which was thought to be just a myth. He gathers a crew together and all his actors for the movie and sets off to find Skull Island.
I want spoil the movie so I'll just leave at that.

The technology of today has really brought Kong to life. He's no longer a man in a costume, he's a fully functioning, realistic looking giant gorilla created in CG. His emotions really show up well and be the end of the film you really feel sorry for him.

The acting is almost top notch with the exception of Jack Black. This is his first serious roll and it's clear to see. When there's a close-up of Jack Black you're almost expecting him to burst into laughter.

Naomi Watts on the other hand is superb considering she's acting towards a blue screen for most of the movie. Her shock scenes are realistic as are her passionate scenes with Kong.

Of course not every movie is perfect. I was gonna give it a 5/5 but there are some parts where the FX aren't fully up to scratch such as the stampede scene (it's clear to see that the actors are in front of a blue screen).

Nevertheless this is an excellent movie and I'd advise everyone to see it.
If you have the 2-Disc DVD you'll be shocked to discover that Skull Island really did exist!!

THE GOOD:
  • Awesome CGI
  • Carnictus
  • Lumpy
  • All the beasts
  • King Kong

    THE BAD:

  • Carl Denham
  • Skull Islanders

    SUMMARY:
King Kong 2005 owned. The Lord of the Rings trilogy director directed an awesome re make of the 1933 King Kong.

The movie is set in 1933, New York. Ann Darrow is a poor woman on the streets and she can't afford nadda. Darrow is on the edge of giving up on life. She steals an apple. The owner grabs her hand until Carl Denham saves her with a dime. Denham takes Darrow to a restaurant to talk about some stuff about her starring in his new movie. It is revealed that Denham's last movie is the movie that has to save his career or he's fired. Without permission, Darrow, Denham, a ship captain and his crew go on a mysterious voyage to find the mysterious Skull Island. With the help of the movie's writer, Jack Driscoll, the crew falls and rises. Upon the arrival of Skull Island, Carl Denham with some of his pals, venture the coast of the island. There they meet the Skull Islanders. When the islanders attack, the rest of the crew comes with guns. The islanders are scared. The crew head back to the ship. When they're on the ship, they are unaware of the islanders doing Olympic strategies of getting on the ship. The islander drops his skull necklace thing. Jack finds it and warns everyone on the ship.

'Tis a long movie. Watch it in theaters or wait for the DVD release. I loved it. The movie itself makes the Lord of the Rings look like Harry Potter. It's that good.

King Kong's main purpose was to show its CGI technology and fulfill Peter Jackson's dream. In a way, this succeeded as a film. Kong looks much better than he ever did, and can now convey emotion. He is more than a monster, and he truly cares for Darrow. Nobody sees this except for Darrow, whose initial horror turns into something deeper. The emotions and reactions that Kong displays are enough to evoke sympathy from the viewer. He is a supremely misunderstood creature. Less successful are the CGI dinosaurs. It feels like Jackson is trying to cram as much as possible into Skull Island, including a brontosaurus chase that lasts a bit too long.

Watts is the one actor here who succeeds in her role. And this is especially difficult given the fact that most of the time, she was acting to something not there. The other actors are not as good. Black works in the first two thirds of the film. He brings his sense of comedy to the director, who will make his film at all costs. Black falters when the script turns more serious, forcing him to do dramatic dialogue. Black has yet to take a completely dramatic role, and from his work here, it is clear he has some work to do. On the other hand, Adrien Brody has found success as a dramatic actor, but doesn't quite work here. Jackson even goes so far as to preface that most people think leading men are dashing, handsome, and not writers.

But these problems are small. King Kong is a fun movie, maybe not as monumental as something from The Lord of the Rings. Technically, the film is superb, but all the special effects in the world cannot make a great film. Jackson was counting on bringing Kong to life which he does visually. Emotionally, King Kong does not always connect. There are some tender moments between beauty and the beast, but also some fairly outdated native stereotypes.
