Disciplining a Cat

What's a good way to get a cat to stop going places it shouldn't go and doing things it shouldn't do?

re: Disciplining a Cat

If you see the cat about to urinate or defecate, pick it up and place it in a litter box.

If the inappropriate behavior continues, you may need to check with a vet and ensure that there isn't a physical reason for the problem.

Ah, the cat is quite good about the litter box. I was more thinking about how to stop it going in closets so it can eat blankets or how to stop it, say, biting people it doesn't like.

I always felt that was slightly ridiculous, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Flick it's ear. It doesn't hurt them, but they sure don't like it. Good if you don't have an endless supply of water.

re: Disciplining a Cat

I have a somewhat related question. My cat likes to dig his claws into the furniture, and he's tearing it up. We got him a scratching post, but he won't use it. Having him declawed isn't an option because he's an indoor/outdoor cat and I don't want to leave him defenseless against other animals in the neighborhood when he's outside. Any suggestions as to how I can get him to stop clawing the furniture?

You could front declaw him if you wish. That would still allow him to climb trees to escape.

Also, try getting a horizontal scratching pad with catnip in it. That worked with our cats.

re: Disciplining a Cat

Ehh...he's not exactly the type to try to run away from fights, he's kind of a bully. I'm afraid he'd get himself hurt if we declawed even just his front paws. We have a scratching post that's kinda angled, and we sprayed some of that catnip spray on it, but still no dice.

re: Disciplining a Cat

Consistency and timing are always key in trying to alter a cat's behavior.

  • The squirt bottle is a popular device used by many (a water mister works just as well, and with less mess), but you have to use it the instant the cat displays improper behavior or you will just confuse the cat.

  • Pennies in a can. For those times when you can't get to the squirter in time, this is a good alternative. Like the squirt bottle above, you need to use it the moment the cat starts an improper behavior, just shake the can sharply & the sudden racket will drive the cat away from what s/he was about to do.

  • There are products available that can help ward your cat away from specific areas. I had a friend swear by a product called, "No Scratch" made by a company called Pet Organics that apparently worked well. Supposedly it is available at a number of pet supply stores.

Providing alternative (and acceptable) scratching surfaces near the location of the unacceptable surface. With one cat we actually used a small cut-off tree trunk we attached to a board (to keep her from tipping it over) and she loved it. Our other cat developed a fascination with cardboard (especially the backs of heavier notebooks).

When you see the cat using the correct surface, praise them, shower affection on them (if they tolerate it), and reward them with a special treat they can only get with that behavior.

The trick with cats is that they are all very much individual, and what works on one doesn't always work on another. Patience, persistence, and consistency should help you out.
