PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

You MUST have a high speed Internet connection. Dial up will NOT work. You will need your logon ID (the ID you log into the service with) and your password.

1. Determine your high speed Internet connection.
a. Cable Modem provided by a Cable Company.
b. DSL service provided by a telecom company.

2. Determine your PS3’s access to your high speed Internet.
c. Wired using an Ethernet cable (8-conductor Cat-5)
d. Wireless requiring no cable to the PS3. **

3. Choosing a router. (If you have one connected & working, skip to number 5.)
If you will be using option “c.” I recommend you choose a wireless router with at least 4 ports. In case you have a PSP or get a wireless ready device later you are already set up to go.
If you are going the wireless route “d”, I recommend the same in case you need to plug a device in directly.

4. “a” Cable modem setup. From your cable box there is an Ethernet cable that plugs into your PC. Locate but don’t do anything yet! Follow the “Installation Instructions” that came with your router. Once it is installed and working properly go to step “5.”
“b” DSL provided by Telco. From your DSL modem there is an Ethernet cable that plugs into your PC. Locate but don’t do anything yet! Follow the “Installation Instructions” that came with your router. Once it is installed and working properly go to step “5.”

5. Click: Wireless or Wired, the connection method you chose. The PS3 is supplied with one (1) Ethernet cord, you may need an additional one.

  • If your PS3 does not support wireless and you can not wire it you will need a Wireless Access Point, commonly referred to as a “WAP”. Once you have one follow the setup instructions (very simple) and click the “Wired” link above.
Here is a pic of my WAP connecting to a 360.

If you need additional clarification or I missed something let me know and I'll edit this post to include it.

re: PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

I'm really getting pissed off now, I've just got my PS3 and I'm trying to get online. I go through the steps and then test the connection but it says something 'timed out' trying to get the isp address...any ideas?

re: PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

At which step do you have a problem?

Have you:

1. Set up the router to connect to the Internet?
2. Confirmed that you can connect to the Internet via the router with another device such as a PC or laptop?

Which connection method did you choose, wireless or wired?

re: PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

I chose the wireless method and I have a working router.

It said my signal strength was 87% does it have to be 100% to work?
I think where I'm going wrong is all the other information you need to enter like the DNS server (I could only find the primary one) and all the other areas I can't remember

87% is fine and should work. Go through the Sony PS3 Support Easy Configuration Setup. This should resolve your issue.

re: PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

Follow the steps listed and tell us where exactly you are.

From what I can gather you have a router upstairs connected to the Virgin broadband modem downstairs, right? Is the router new? Can you connect to the Internet with the PC?

Yes.

Not sure I understand the question. The PC does not have to be turned on or connected to the Internet. Does that answer your question?

Sometimes you can't establish a connection with the server for various reasons. Signal strength should not be one of them. Keep trying to get the update.

Edit: Try adding a signal gain antenna to your router. Get a no name brand 7.5 dBi or greater gain.

Deadwing, can you give us more information? Where is the connection test timing out? On the PS3? Are you using a wired connection? Have you confirmed the router is connected and working properly?

re: PS3 - Online Setup Instructions

I haven't tried to get online for any games yet, just for the Playstation Store. I do have one question though. When I go to set up the online connections for gaming, where do I begin the process? Do I select an option from the PS3 browser menu, or do I access it from the game itself? Where is the actual connection established? If I want to play Rock Band online, for example, do I select the online option from within the game itself, or do I use one of the browser options, which'll then take me to a server and jump me into the game?

You go online via the game you are playing.
