i got this stupid vista, the game installs, patch installs, but i keep getting an error thing. any suggestions??

This may be a bit late for you now, but it could be very useful to others - I got an original CD european version (I've had it a while XD) to work under Vista Home Premium by doing the following in this order:

1) Install WA and restart computer straight away
2) Go to the WA.exe file, right-click, properties, compatibility tab. Under "show settings for all users" select run in compatibility mode for WinXP with SP2, and run as admin. click 'ok' and do the same again.
3) Go to your shortcut, right-click, properties and make sure the compatibility settings are the same (NOTE: if you use the provided shortcut under the 'Games' folder provided by Vista, this is not required)
4) Download and install patch two full install (not just the exe) then patch three full install (if it prompts you to restart do so immediately). DO NOT just rely on patch three full install asfor some reason this does not work, but you don't need to go all the way down to patch one thankfully.

The first couple of times I started up the game after doing this the intro (TEAM17 / Microprose / mushroom cloud animation) was very odd colours (greens and purples, whites etc. where they shouldn't be) probably due to colour settings for Vista, but the game played fine. The fourth time I played it (this morning XD) all the colours were perfect.
