The series follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating the Fire Lord and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.
Avatar draws on the four classical elements common to most ancient philosophies (rather than the five classical Chinese elements) for its bending arts: Water, Earth, Fire and Air. Although each has its own variation, most ancient philosophies incorporate these four elements in some way: examples include the classical Hindu, Buddhist, and Greek elemental traditions.
In the show’s opening, each element is accompanied by 2 Chinese characters: an ancient Chinese seal script character on the left, and a modern Chinese character on the right:
* Water (水) is associated with benevolence and adaptivity (Chinese: 善; pinyin: shàn). * Earth (土) is associated with strength (Chinese: 强; pinyin: qiáng). * Fire (火) is associated with intensity and ferocity (Chinese: 烈; pinyin: liè). * Air (气) is associated with peace and harmony (Chinese: 和; pinyin: hé).
Aang and Appa are awoken a hundred years later by two siblings of the Southern Water Tribe, Katara and Sokka. Aang learns that the Fire Nation started a war a hundred years ago, just after his disappearance. The Fire Nation's opening move in its campaign for global conquest was to launch a genocidal attack on the Air Nomads which drove Aang's entire people to extinction, thus making him "the last Airbender" left alive. He realizes that he must fulfill his destiny of becoming the Avatar and return balance to the world by defeating the Fire Nation. Aang sets out to master the three unlearned elements: Water, Earth, and Fire. With Katara and Sokka, Aang decides to head first to the North Pole to find a Waterbending master.
Aang travels to a Crescent Island in the Fire Nation after contacting Avatar Roku in the spirit world. Upon instruction from Roku, he travels to the Crecent Island to a Fire-Sage temple wherein he contacts Roku on the solstice. Roku tells Aang that he must master all four elements and end the war before this time. Aang is told that Sozin's Comet, which Fire Lord Sozin used as a power supply to start the war, will return in the coming summer, giving the Fire Nation enough power to ultimately accomplish victory.
For most of their journey to the North Pole, the group is pursued by Zuko, a banished Fire Nation prince and son of Fire Lord Ozai who is obsessed with capturing Aang in attempt to restore his lost honor since being banished and burned by his father for speaking out of turn.
CAST
Most of the show's main characters made their debut in the first three episodes. Zach Tyler Eisen and Mae Whitman provided the voices of protagonists Aang and Katara, with Jack DeSena as Sokka's voice. Dante Basco and Mako starred as antagonists Zuko and Iroh, though their role in the show would change near the end of the season. Aang's animal companions, Appa and Momo, were both voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. In the third episode of the season, a new enemy to both Aang and Zuko, Admiral Zhao, was voiced by Jason Isaacs. When the season neared its middle, Aang and his friends make friends with Jet, who was voiced by Crawford Wilson.
After leaving the North Pole and mastering Waterbending, Aang travels to the Earth Kingdom to master Earthbending. There, the group meets Toph, a blind Earthbending prodigy who becomes Aang's second teacher. The heroes discover information about an upcoming solar eclipse which would leave the Fire Nation powerless and open to invasion. They struggle to reach the Earth King with this vital information, but are detoured by Appa's kidnapping.
Azula (Zuko's sister), and her two friends Mai and Ty Lee chase the group as they struggle to reach Ba Sing Se. Azula engineers a plan that allows the Fire Nation complete control over Ba Sing Se and the rest of the Earth Kingdom, and destroys any hope of a large-scale invasion of the Fire Nation. Azula is believed to have killed the Avatar, and there is no hope left.
CAST
Most of the main characters who made their debut in the first season remained the same, with Zach Tyler Eisen as Aang, Mae Whitman as Katara, Jack DeSena as Sokka, and Dante Basco as the anti-hero Zuko. However, several new characters appear: Toph voiced by Jessie Flower, Azula voiced by Grey DeLisle and Long Feng voiced by Clancy Brown. Two antagonists, Mai and Ty Lee, are introduced as Azula's minions who are tasked with capturing Aang. They were voiced by Cricket Leigh and Olivia Hack, respectively. Mako, who voiced Iroh, died during production and was replaced by Greg Baldwin.
The group recovers from the fall of Ba Sing Se, and travel to the planned invasion site. On the day of the solar eclipse, Aang's group and a smaller band of warriors launch a smaller invasion, which ultimately fails. Zuko confronts his father and defects from the Fire Nation. After a series of events, he manages to gain the trust of the protagonists and becomes Aang's firebending teacher. Aang and Zuko unlock the firebending secrets of the "Sun Warriors", Zuko helps Katara find the man who killed her mother, and Sokka and Zuko travel to a Fire Nation prison to rescue Sokka's father and Suki.
On the day of Sozin's Comet, Fire Lord Ozai harnesses the comet's power to start a genocidal campaign to destroy the rest of the world. Aang and his friends face the self-proclaimed "Phoenix King" Ozai, Azula (now crowned as the new Fire Lord by Ozai), and the Fire Nation army. Aang confronts and defeats Ozai while the Order of the White Lotus takes back Ba Sing Se from the Fire Nation. At the same time, Zuko is incapacitated by Azula, whom Katara then defeats. Zuko becomes the new Fire Lord and promises to help rebuild the world alongside Aang.
CAST
All of the protagonists from season 2 remained the same, with Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, and Jessie Flower, respectively. After the voice actor Mako died during the production of season two, Iroh was voiced by Greg Baldwin. Zuko, who is voiced by Dante Basco, joins the Avatar during the episode "The Western Air Temple." This leaves Azula, who is voiced by Grey DeLisle, as the primary antagonist. Mark Hamill joins the cast to voice Fire Lord Ozai, who had previously only been shown playing minor roles in the series.
Aang beats the firelord when learning to go in the Avatar State on Sozin's comet. Aang does not kill the firelord like past reincarnations tell him to, but he instead takes away the fire lords bending. Prince Zuko, Firelord Ozai's son, becomes new firelord while Princess Azula becomes trapped. Avatar and Prince Zuko bring piece to the world. Toph doesn't go to her parents, but instead goes out to her sparring mates. Katara and Sokka go to their dad and finally reunite for a final time. The show ends as Katara and Aang Kiss.

re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
I think it's easy to say this is one of the best animated TV shows which was ever broadcast. What a wonderful blend of magic, humor, seriousness, and creativity! I am, however, disapproving of this apparent movie that's coming out in 2010.
I was a big fan of the TV Show, and was sad to see it end so abruptly. But I really enjoyed it, I hope the movie doesn't end up too bad. I will remain skeptical.

re: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Hey guys, Koloth made me want to check this out in the Movies forum and I'm asking, where and when do they show this during the days? So far, I can't seem to find it, so it gives me only option to either download or stream the episodes since I can't afford the DVD series right now. =\
I haven't seen it on Nickelodeon in ages, but I think it appears on Nicktoons from time to time (which is a Nickelodeon channel dedicated to old Nick shows).
I would just look for the episodes to watch online to be honest. It is also way more convenient. :\
Yeah this show seems to always be on Nicktoons, I watch it with my little sis a lot, she's all into it. I think they should make a 4th season, I mean I think they left off with a lot of questions, the main one that's bothering me is, What happened to Zuko's mom?
Definitely one of the best animated series ever. Or at least, in my opinion.
Yep, it definitely left me and my siblings practically yelling at the TV when they just left a cliffhanger with Zuko asking about his mother. :I Still a really good series, anyway. I'm not too sure about that Avatar movie that's coming out sometime soon, though.

For a while i loved this show. Then the time of the shows changed and my schedule just didn't work with Aangs. I did watch the last episode and it was awesome. I don't think the new movie will be good.
