8th birthday: Final Fantasy VIII. 3 months later, storyline beaten.
Bought Final Fantasy VII for £5 (about $2.50). Was very impressed, finished in a few months. Didn't like as much as VIII though.
Got Final Fantasy IX on release date. Very impressed. Spent more time on it than the other two combined. Still one of my favourite PS1 (and FF) games ever.
9th birthday: Final Fantasy Anthology. The best 2 games in the series, for the console anyway, ever. I spent an insane amount of time on both IV and V. IV was an epic experience, and it's my 2nd favourite FF (and PS1 (and 2d RPG)) game. V was awesome, and

Then, it was released. The second best RPG I had ever played. Final Fantasy X. I rented it every week until I had beaten it. I kinda broke the stores copy by overplaying it, so I returned it. Bought my own, that ended up glitched as hell. The Gui battle became unpassable, multiple scenes froze etc. etc. Bought my second, and current, copy as soon as I could (next day that is).
Christmas, 4 years ago: Final Fantasy X-2. Was... enjoyable, but it felt rushed. It just didn't click.
Last year, bought Final Fantasy XII (twice. I returned it the first time). Didn't enjoy it at all. Did everything that was doable.
A few months ago, I got Final Fantasy III (DS). It's better than XII and X-2 but... I'm not going to finish this one any time soon. One of the four FF games I've played and haven't completed.
Weeks ago, got Final Fantasy IV, V and VI Advanced. IV and V were even better than I remembered (added features helped), but VI was just... meh. The second of the four main series games I've played but not finished, this time not by choice... fully anyway. Playing VI atm actually.
Days ago, got Dawn of Souls. FF and II are both, well, awesome for their time. It's no surprise Square were able to pull themselves out of bankruptcy with FF. Will finish these after VI.
About 2 days ago, I got Final Fantasy II, III (and Mystic Quest) for SNES (thanks to Subaru telling me where I could).

Favourite: X.
Least favourite: Either X-2 or XII (or possibly III depending on whether or not I play more).

Edit: That's just game history. I'm also pretty knowledgable with IV, V, IX and X. Pretty knowledgable =/= vet ftr, but I can answer some complex questions.
