ok, I will give you a detailed walkthrough on how to get the star:

First, when you start, make a left. Jump across the gap.
Go through the door and make your way around the bottomless pit and the rolling rocks. Now go through the door. You will be in a room with an elevator. Go down the elevator, and get the metal cap. (if you already have unlocked it). You need speed for this part. Quickly run, following the underwater path until you see switch. Hit it, and the gates will open. When you go through the door, jump across the two gaps to get the star.
