Is SNES Chrono Trigger actually a rare game? |
|
I've noticed that Chrono Trigger sells for a lot of money on Ebay and several of the listings claim that the game is very rare. Sometimes up to $40 for the cartridge alone. However, I recently saw a rarity guide on Super Nintendo games that rates Chrono Trigger as a D rating for rarity.
http://www.invertedweb.com/community/article.php?a=371 The list was compiled using auction sites to discover how often a game is actually listed. I've talked about this on IGN and some other message boards. Some users actually say it's not rare at all. They actually produced 2 million copies in the US. The amount of people listed on Gamespot that actually own the game is pretty high as well.

I've only seen ir for sell in my area twice in the last 7 or 8 years in my area. I was lucky enough to buy it the first time I saw it

quote Dark SamuraiI've seen a few copies. They had some at Blockbuster video but they're gone. My local flea market had one today for $50. Ebay has about 40 carts right now and almost always has that many every single week. It's a high demand game. Probably the moment they put it on the shelf someone will pick it up.

You can find anything on ebay. If you don't count ebay than almost all snes rpg's are rare. Especially if you don't have a credit card.

quote Dark SamuraiThere are some games that only have one title that are only on Ebay ever few months. Those are the ones that are actually rare. Ebay is a great way to gague the rarity of titles over a wider area than just your own neighborhood. Chances are if you can't find it in your hometown there's somewhere else where there are probably a million copies just laying around somewhere else a 100 miles away. If you can't find it on Ebay then it's something that's actually rare.

Then that makes practically nothing rare. Not everyone has access to a computer so it is harder for them to find this game.

quote Dark SamuraiIt's farily easy to access a computer unless you just live in the middle of nowhere 30 miles from town. But if you're that far away then you're not going to be going to any game stores either. They have them in libraries, the malls, and even cafes. There are several games out there that are only sold every few months or only have one copy currently for sale right now on Ebay. There are several games that are at the A+ rating that show up exactly that often. Just check out the rarity guide and see those games. Here are the ones they list. Pretty much the rarest games are any they used in competitions such as the one they had in Blockbuster for Donkey Kong Country or the one they had for Star Fox. One of the rarest games ever made was a competition cartridge made for the NES. Prototypes of games are also quite rare. quote Dark SamuraiThey don't sell any videogames at the local gas station. How about the local pawn shop or videostore that's trying to get rid of their old rentals? I've seen Secret of Mana several times along with the SNES Final Fantasy games there. Those are supposed to be rare too.

Try telling that to that heathen, I think he just wants to argue. BUt in reality, if not using a computer to look for a game then this game is a hard find... but a worthy one.
