Tbh, I've never actually defeated him. Higher levels might help, but then he does level up with you, I think.
I've also heard that scroll items are useful. You can get them mostly from monsters in the library as long as you have the weird mask you fund in Ogdens drawer in your inventory. -------------------

Level 33 is too low. Level up, the higher the better

This was the hardest battle in almost any game I can remember! My characters were:
Koudelka: Lvl 62 James: Levl 60 Edward: Levl 61 Hanging out in the vestry (1st floor) beforehand and fighting Mars repeatedly often yeilded scrolls (only place I ever got 'em). Gargoyle is WIND based though, so Air Scroll won't hurt him. Even with these high level characters, Edward using Lifedrinker and both Koudelka and James using reflect (on themselves...don't do it to Edward or you won't be able to heal him) the battle took almost half an hour. It's tough. Gargoyle favors magical attacks, but reflect really screws those up. If you keep Edward out in front with Lifedrinker, Gargoyle can do relatively little harm to him. I found that about every three rounds or so I was able to get a scroll off (use Koudelka -- the higher the INT the better the scroll will work). The three scrolls I used were 2 water and 1 earth. They each did about 7900 damage. The Gargoyle has THIRTY THOUSAND HIT POINTS. Do the math...it's a long, tough battle. HOWEVER, keep Koudelka blocked off by Edward and move James to the rear but on the extreme side of the grid. Keep recasting reflect as needed (most importantly on Koudelka). Since magic spells don't work very well (they don't do a lot of damage) I recommend using buff spells (fortify str) on Edward so he does hellish damage on Gargoyle in between magic scroll attacks. What really pissed me off about this fight is you get NO EXPERIENCE for it! You do get an Idol. . . (whoopie) and the ultimate Elaine is not as tough as this boss, so it's like fighting the ultimate boss before the end of the game. Sheesh.

Yep, I used reflect too, but I found that even at level 3 spells were not as effective as scrolls. My advice is, if you have scrolls, use 'em on the Gargoyle. Even the ultimate Elaine is NOTHING compared to this boss.

gargoyle!!??
koudelka lv46, magic-caster and carrying bowgun(in case) edward lv44, carrying lifedrinker and fully-equpped james lv44, healer/fortifier/reflect caster its that simple! of course, i lost to it once, because it killed james before i even had to heal! hope this helped guys, koz it sure helped me out! ------------------- magic is everywhere, a force that can create or destroy. i choose both in my path to becoming the best rpg gamer, no matter what the dangers may be.

just finished the game myself and have a new strategy for gargoyle boss or maybe I was just lucky.
Equip items with good agility. Just keep Edward and James in the front and Koudelka in the back row(from form in the menu). Always have reflect on Koudelka. Edward(lifebreaker equipped) and James should be at a level where they can take 2-4 hits before dying. Try to keep all 3 characters alive. You should try to have reflect on them as much as possible as well. Heal only using your items as the gargoyle will usually kill the character before you can heal them with a spell. I just cast level 3 magic with Koudelka did around 700-1000 damage as much as I could before my roman nuts(10 or so) ran out. When he casts his magic spell and hits a character with reflect it should poison him and do around 1000 to 2000 or more. After your roman nuts run out your actions will be limited and you can't attack or cast spells as much. Try to keep edward and james on oppsoites sides of the fields. The gargoyle will basically kill 2 characters in one turn so just keep reviving Edward and James with whiskey to make sure he doesn't get in front of Koudelka and only attacks her with his spell. At this point attack when you can and with the occasional Poison from the reflect spell he should die. This takes awhile and maybe I just got lucky but it was a hard boss. I didn't use any scrolls. koudelka 45 edward 44 james 44
