Hey,
Wasn't really sure where to send this. With gaurded enthuasism I have awaited the return of "ECW", guarded was the correct state of mind for this fan. I don't think you have your finger on the pulse of the true ECW fan base. There were a few reasons that ECW was as big a success as it was, and maybe some suggestions that might help save it.
ECW was an alternative to WWF or WWE in its hay day. The reason that the 2 pay per views have been successful, is that fan base is still out there looking for an alternative. Thats not to say that we do not watch the WWE product, as I would guess that most ECW fans do, but our love is for something different than the WWE product. That being said, you are bringing back a sucessful product with a receipe for failure.at least the rise and fall of this ECW this time around will at least be quicker and less painful for this fan, as long as it stays on its current track.
Now, instead of this turning into a lecture/bitch session on how you have bastardized the ECW lable, I have decided to offer a few suggestions.
1. Do not incorporate the WWE and ECW lables( at least in public). At this point in time after seeing the first ECW show on Sci-Fi I feel like I am watching a WWE product. (see paragraph 2). The charactes are running back and forth between the two shows, and frankly thats not what I want to see. If I want to see the WWE ill tune in on Monday and Friday nights (Which I do, but if things do not change I won't be watching on Tuesdays). SUGGESTION: have the charactes move between the shows, but have them stick to a storyline in only one show. In other words make ECW a seperate entity. That is what the true ECW fan loved about the ECW is it set them apart. The people who have watched ECW in the past have prided themselves on being different than the WWE fan, and were able to seperate themselves from the WWE through ECW.
2. instead of a live show every week, take some of the very best matches from the house shows that you are doing and run those with interviews. this allows you the freedom of doing different things, and when a combination of wrestlers are doing great things in the ring, to let that be shown on air. This will make the product better for all your house shows. You will then also be able to promote specific matches at the house shows during the TV broadcast.
3. Do not promte this as a kid friendly brand. ECW fans are adults that enjoy a rated "R" brand of wrestling. Did you hear the chants from the Ballroom at ECW 2??? Those were not kid friendly chants, and I would have made my daughter leave the room had she been there. Because I was a fan of ECW I knew what to expect and made sure she was not watching. That is the audience that ECW is meant to bring, Pushing things to the extreme with a fan base of 11 and 12 y/o is not the right combination. Put a disclaimer on ECW shows that they are for adults and the content of the show will be adult. If parents insist on bringing their children...then thats their problem. I am a single dad that lives in Florida. I have been to many independant shows. I go to these shows because they give me something that the WWE does not, and I don't take my kid to them. ECW made it because they were willing to push the limits, dont set the product up for failure by not giving this brand the same oportunity to push those limits.
I hope this gave you some insight, and if Vince is looking for a consultant I am available (I'm serious about that offer). Good luck and I hope to see at least a few of my suggestions implemented.
