Cross Country Advice |

Hello, i have posted a new thread to ask advice on 'Cross Country'. For those of you who dont know, it is LONG distance running though the country.
I need a few hints/tips and advice on breathing, what to eat before/after, drinking, stitches, footing, pace and any other things. All i know about breathing is that you breath in with your nose and out with your mouth. What to eat before - i eat nothing because getting a stitch is the worst thing that could happen. Drinking - Some water just before the run Stitches - i always seem to get stitches when running, and i never eat anything before. I want to know how to stop stitches in the stomach. Footing - Someone said that when u put your left foot down, you breath in and your right u breath out. Its something like that anyway. Pace - How slow or fast should i go? All of the above are comments on the things i would like advice about. If you dont want to write all this advice please show me a website on all of this, because i have searched google but found nothing. by the way, what time do you run a kilometer in? My average is about 3 mins 40ish. | |

Eat a light breakfast before you start running, you do need some energy & breakfast will do that. Maybe a small bowl of cereal (maybe add some fruit?).
The stitches might be from not eating. I can't really give any more advice than that as I am now in a wheelchair due to some idiot who decided he would screw my spine up but when I did run I found that I would run out of breath running fast so maybe start with a soft jog & keep the pace until you feel comftable enough to go a bit faster. | |

As for running, go light for the distance, not fast for the short run. Do the same distance, only faster each time. If you can keep it steady to a good length, then increase it and see if you can keep it going longer. I'm not much of a runner, either. ------------------- Can I run around and make veiled comments about others too?

Practice. That's all you need. Make sure you have some food before as well as plenty of water.

quote mattie005I am not cross-counrty buff but from the sound of it I don't think you have it right, I assume cross country is relatively long, therefore you will need some sort of energy that will be released throughout your run, you will need stuff with sugar to get you going, however a sugar high only lasts for a few minutes, you also need something slower to keep you going with energy, potatoes are good. -------------------

I know a lot of cross country teams that will get together the night before a meet and have a big pasta party. The pasta gives them energy for the next day. And don't load yourself up before a run but also don't starve yourself.
I'm not a cross country runner but I used to run a couple miles daily for soccer and from what I remember I didn't need any breathing techniques. Basically I just kept a steady breath, whatever was comfortable for me and if I found myself getting out of breath I'd take like 3 really deep breaths and return to normal. Also the pace you take is completely dependent on how you feel. Obviously you don't want to go so slow you're last but don't push yourself too hard in the beginning of the race. The people that get far ahead in the beginning may start to lag behind in the end because they have little energy left but if you keep a steady pace where you won't be worn out you can push yourself near the end and that's probably your best bet. ------------------- ![]() You butter-fingered pink thing!
