re: Disc Read Error/Laser Problems [II] |

No, it started failing over time. A few years after I bought it, it stopped reading blue and black backed discs (meaning no PS1 games and a few blue-backed PS2 games), then soon after it stopped reading DVD's, then each of my games stopped being read one by one until my PS2 stopped reading any disc altogether.

Well, for the past few years I have been having slight disk read error issues with my PS2. In the last week or so it got so bad that it wasn't reading any discs. So today I opened it up to clean it out ect, and now it sits on the flashing 'Reading Disc' or whatever it says for upwards of an hour before saying 'Disk Read Error'.
Although some of my disks now work, its really confusing. -------------------

Did you clean all the dust out of there? Sometimes there is extra dust left behind.

what i don't get...why don't people quit being stupid n call sony? sony got sued over DRE's and they have to fix em for free. so as long as you DON'T open ur ps2, and there's no damage to it, they'll fix it for free. i sent in mine and it took like 2 weeks but works fine now. sometimes they'll even upgrade some equipment so it's faster or something. and yes, i realize that most ppl own a slim ps2 n i don't think that's free to fix but some ppl are starting to have problems with their fat ps2's now. just call sony n they'll help ya!

Most of the time they won't help you for free. Warranties don't normally last longer then a year or two. And even if Sony will fix the problem for free some people don't wish to go through the hassle.

quote InfiniteQFT I don't really play my PS2 enough for it to be worth the hassle, not to mention its 7 years old. The only reason I'm even upset about it a little is because I recently bought Kingdom Hearts I & II, and not even halfway through the first one it refuses to read it. I can't finish the game so I can't move on to the second one. It's really upsetting. -------------------

Hi guys,
First post here. Um, I dropped my PS2 a couple of months ago. Probably about a foot. It kind of bounced once and then landed on the flat side. After that it wouldn't read discs. It still picks up my memory card and controllers and loads the BIOS it just won't read discs. I followed some of the instructions in this guide: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Guides/ps2diy/ I've realligned the tray even though it would still come in and out okay. I've actually sat the console down and peered in through the back of the DVD drive to make sure tha laser is hitting the disc and that the disc is spinning. Also I've taken the laser off and then put it back again just to make sure the cable wasn't knocked loose. I'll see whether I can get the materials I need to clean the laser tomorrow. If that doesn't help I might post up some pics of the interior to see if anyone can see anything that might be wrong by sight. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated. : )

Yeah definitely go ahead and clean the laser off. Remember when you are cleaning it make sure to wipe out all the dust inside of the PS2 and around the laser. Then come back and let us know if it's working or if it isn't.
Welcome to Neoseeker by the way. Goodluck dude I hope you get it back up and running. ------------------- ![]() Credit: 2pac4ever

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure if this is the right place, but oh well...
My friend owns a "Slim" PS2, and has GTA: III and GTA: Vice City for the PS2. He has a standard memory card that comes with the box. He's been playing GTA III on his PS2 for years on the same memory card, and now, just recently, his game won't load. However, when he takes his memory card out, the game loads fine, and works perfectly. When we checked for GTA: VC, it loads perfectly with or without the memory card. I'd appreciate it if you guys could come up with possible problems/solutions to solve this whole ordeal. Thanks. ------------------- ![]() unwind...

It is in the right place because he's having problems with his discs not reading while his memory card is in his PS2. My only guess would be to buy another memory card and transfer the game save over to that one.

I posted here about 2-3 pages ago, and I am having problems again. The Sims won't work it says Ps2, but after that it just stays a black screen for like 5 minutes and nothing happens, the disc is very scratched, what can I do to clean it?
