Why are there some situations in which we can actually lose lives, and others not? And what happens when we lose all the lives, will we have to play the game from the beginning?

Im shitscared that Ill lose all the lives, and be forced to begin all over again. Not that it is a long game, but I really have spent loads of time with it..

I hope someone has the time to either discourage me, or tell me some good news!
