[Suggestion] "NeoHTML" Tags
|
In Neohomes, there is a lot of HTML that we can use, and a lot that we can't, but an idea just came to mind which could make our NeoHomes slightly more personalised with 0% added risk...
There are times, for example, when you might want to output the username of the person who is visiting your home, and with a simple "NeoHTML" tag, this can be done without the user doing any server side work and without using any JavaScript... Example code:
Would output:
When I visited the page. Obviously that's only a very basic example, and I'm sure people could come up with a huge number of possible suggestions and uses for it. Theoretically this is a very simple system to implement which could add a lot of extra personal touches to NeoHomes and make the NeoHome system substantially more powerful without causing any risk to the user, provided of course that everything is validated before output. Anyone else for this? Any ideas for possible improvements, or possible ideas for tags would be appreciated. ------------------- Get Rick Roll'd by my Neohome while you still can!

Besides different things (username, avatar, etc.) about the current person viewing the NeoHome, what other ideas do you have in mind for NeoHTML tags?

It doesn't necessarily have to be for the person currently viewing the page. For example an extra parameter could be added to define what user you wanted to output information for. So, for example, I could do something like this:
And it would output how many posts Redemption had made, regardless of who is viewing it, which would mean that where NeoHomes make reference to information which may change frequently, this can save a lot of updates, or a user ID can be specified as opposed to a username, so that if the person has a username changes the the information will still work. It doesn't have to be information about a user either, it can be information about a forum (which can come in handy when you're making a list of your favourite forums in your home, which many people do), or threads. So example implementations might be:
There are a lot of commonly used areas in NeoHomes, for example people like to list their favourite forums, threads, list their NeoFriends etc, and the information regarding these various things can change, sometimes quite frequently, and it saves people from having to constantly be updating. What I'm talking about are quite basic implementations, but with a bit of thought, such things could bring a whole new aspect of power to users and NeoHomes without causing any security vulnerabilities. Sure, it might take a little extra processing, but as with any code, if it's implemented correctly then the performance difference shouldn't be to noticable. ------------------- Get Rick Roll'd by my Neohome while you still can!

Alright, I do think it is a good idea then. I was being uncreative and couldn't think of many uses for it, but now I can.

This sounds like a nice idea, and I can see how the tags can be expanded to output a wide variety of things.
But, the question is, how many people would actually use these tags in their neohomes? I can see how the username of the reader and friends' avatars would be used a fair bit, but I really can't see many others being used often (not even the thread and posts tags). It seems that most people use their neohomes to show off their web design skills a tad, to enable people to learn a little bit more about them, and to list their neofriends. I can't think of any other tags which could be created, but then again, I'm not very imaginative, so maybe someone else can. =P

What Tom is proposing is to allow users to manipulate pieces of information and insert them into the NeoHome. An equally powerful concept would be to enable this for the NeoHome, and Biography/Interests section of your user profile. Realistically though it has to be more powerful than a few tags, but such a project could enable truly interesting things on the site.
