If it's just computers, no. If you have one person play and have infinate stock and let the computer beat you to a bloody pulp, it'll work. But you need at least one controller plugged in and one human player.

The way I did it was put on my best character so I could fight Mewtwo with him and put it with 3 enemies with no time and infinite stock. Then just left my gamecube on and went about my day. When it was the same time that I started the next day I uit the match and the "New Challenger" thing happened. Then I beat him down.
