The Dark Elf Glitch

Did you know that if you do not visit Edward (when he is sick) in the town south of the cave, and you go to the cave where the Dark Elf resides that the game gets really mad at you? The Dark Elf tells you that you shouldn't be here or something like that (if anyone remembers the exact quote I'd like to know it) and does 9,999 to one char, and then another, and another. And don't even think about running... Hope you saved your game

re: The Dark Elf Glitch

Help, I'm experiencing this glitch. the dark elf hits me for 9999 each time and if I somehow use phoenix downs to survive 4 or 5 rounds, he just casts quake for 4k to my party. How do I stop this and continue with the game?

You need to visit Edward in the Castle/City and get the special item from him (I can't recall the name, but you'll know when you get it.). I would also recommend that you get staves, gloves, and clothing instead of armor because of the magnetic field in the cave. After you see Edward you should be okay with fighting the Elf, but don't waste Phoenix Downs if he damages your party badly right away; I'm pretty sure that the Key Item goes into effect once your party goes down.

re: The Dark Elf Glitch

Yeah, it's not actually a glitch. If you've spoken to Edward in the town before you go to the cave, he gives you a harp or something. When you fight the elf, you can't help but die and its ok because once your party is defeated, the scene changes and you see Edward get out of bed and play the harp. This destroys the magnetic field and means you can equip armour again without being affected so you can fight the elf again. Once you've got decent armour on, he's not actually that hard to beat.

Hope this helps...

It is called the twin harp. This is yet again another touching part of the game. A friend, sensing others are in danger, risks his own life to help his friends.

The moral of the story is do what you can with what you have.

re: The Dark Elf Glitch

Just tried it myself (on the original Final Fantasy 2 for SNES, not one of the remakes). If you go to the Dark Elf before talking to Edward and getting the TwinHarp, he says the same thing at the beginning of the fight that he always says(something like "YOU CAN'T USE METALLIC WEAPONS. YOU CAN'T DEFEAT ME.")

As soon as the fight begins, the Dark Elf says "YOU FOOLS!" and then hits everyone for 9,999 damage.
