Folding @ Home II

Team Number: 53701

If your like me, and you have a good computer with a great processor, your not using all of your cpu cycles all of the time. Why not put them to good use?

Folding @ Home

quote
What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.
I leave my computer on most of the time, and I've been wanting to try out Folding At Home. I just downloaded it, and started our own Neoseeker team. The program runs in the background, just using spare CPU cycles. My processor has been hovering around 60 to 100% load while I run it, and its risen 9 degree's C. You can easily change how much percent of your processor it uses (from 0 to 100%).

Current projects:
* Alzheimer's Disease
* Cancer
* Huntington's Disease
* Osteogenesis Imperfecta
* Parkinson's Disease
* Ribosome & antibiotics

And of course, those of you running the program right now.

If I left you out (and you should be in the list), then sorry, just let me know and I'll put you up there. I'm positive I left someone out though.

Since its going to be very hard to keep up with who is still running the program, and whose not, I'll just change the list to whats on the F@H website. When you set up the program, please use your full user name, and (pc) or (PS3), or (*processor type*) if you want to.

Thank You for helping the cause!

I'm using the Vista GPU console. It was a snap to get up and running. I'm also running it on Vista Business x64 and it's completely stable now for 19 hours. Download Link *it's the one with the vista orb logo.

I used this link to get it going.

tried and failed again. i give up on the console versions.
i have an old p4 system lying around and am thinking about turning it into a 24/7 folding rig,and installing linux as from what i read runs the folding programs better.I have never used linux before so what version should i get?
quote Iceguy2003
My Nvidia system won't run it right with the latest Nvidia drivers... so it's out of the folding scene for awhile. Only my slower 3850 is folding now.
quote courgan
which driver? just so i do not mess mine up.

re: Folding @ Home II

The console window must stay open to fold. You close it, all folding stops. On fahmon I have my console exe files on the desktop and just point to the general folder thats it's in and not the work folder that's created inside. My mistake at first was pointing it to the work folder which will not work. Hope that helps.

Yeah whats the deal with those cpu WU's. The preferred deadline on one I saw was 42 days!? It's it actually going to need all that time? And what all are you folding with anyway?

Yeah I'm trying to get something going on my laptop again. But it's not wanting to run a full speed like before. My desktop on the other hand has been on non stop since Tuesday, with 3 shut downs in between for a 5 minute cooldown. I'll be down for 3 days this weekend though.

re: Folding @ Home II

my wife and oldest kid going on a jrotc campout,competition tommorrow so i can run my rig from fri morning till sat night no interuptions.My wife makes me turn it off at night because it is in our bedroom and she cannot sleep with the fans running.7 120mm and a 250 on top it can be a little loud at night.

the cpu with -advmethods enabled is giving me 905 points every other day instead of 225 every other dayso anyone just folding with the cpu can enable that flag and getmore points for the same time.but it is intel only right now so amd users get ripped off.

re: Folding @ Home II

I'll have to try out the cpu client on my rig then. I dont know how well it'll work as my cpu usage is pegged at 65% while running the ati gpu2 client. Yet running the same client on my laptop with an nvidia chip yielded only 3-5% usage on the cpu.

re: Folding @ Home II

there is a flag to set the cpu% on the gpu client. you may need to reinstall and go thru the advanced settings.

re: Folding @ Home II

I've started folding again. I'm going to try folding on 2 rigs at home on and off, and my work system at NeoHQ (minus when I need it to be snappy). Hoping to climb the ranks on our team but unfortunately all my systems are fairly dated and none of them will be doing GPU or SMP folding.

What are you running as a work computer if you don't mind me asking?

Have a look on this page. I suggest the client with the Vista orb design. It's all cmd line based (console). If you want a gui version with a small hit on performance then grab the required client on that same page. There are tutorials all over google if you need assistance setting everything up. From download to folding it should take 5-7minutes.
