re: Folding @ Home II

Took me 4 days of on and off folding on my laptop do finish a cpu WU. I was not using the smp client. Once I get my laptop cooling pad I'll be using the gpu client instead. Not worth having the laptop working 4 days just to pick up 905 points.

Nope, not worth it stressing a laptop like that. But, if this one does one in 12 hours... somehow someway, and gives a good point score, I'll keep it cooled like I have been and let it fold some. What CPU do you have in your laptop?

must be the smaller work load.have you ran fahmon to see the points for it?
i switched from the unicore to the smp for the cpu and it gets done faster and for more points.but that is on my e8400 running at 3.6.

Hahah that's what I keep thinking about my top 10 spot. Oh well I'll see how well I can keep up with just the video card going.

re: Folding @ Home II

Well, ended up now that it's 14 hours later, the laptop is 68% done with its first WU. Not 'too' bad. Still don't know if it's worth it.

When you're done that run the gpu client on it for the same amount of time and do a side by side comparison. Should give you a good indication of what would be better.

Right now I'm running two systems : a Core i7 920 and a QX9650. The real folding firepower is coming from two GTX 285 cards (one in each system.)
which folds faster the i7 or the qx9650?
are you running 2 gpu clients per card or 1?

good to have you aboard

Thanks.

I'm running 1 client per card. Would it be more effective to run 2? I didn't realize that helped.

The Core i7 folds faster but the video card is doing the lion's share of the work.

quote courgan
you can run 1 on each gpu just assign different numbers and use the -gpu0 and gpu1 flags when setting it up
Huh -- I didn't know that. I thought the client didn't support SLI at all.

I'll replace one of the GTX 285 with a GTX 295 and set up two clients. Running on the Core i7 I don't think you can get really much more out of a folding system, unless maybe you went with three GTX 280's I suppose.

I hate you .

btw, your at rank 11 now.

Its great we have you on the team now, I think our rank has jumped 100 points in the last few days.

Hehe... sorry and thanks, I guess

I think I should be in 9th place today. Getting further will take a bit longer.

Unfortunately, this laptop has an unsupported GPU, the x1400.

re: Folding @ Home II

The gpu client keeps crashing on my computer. Here are the errors I copied them from the log file.

It got up to 29% then this.
[21:18:32] Run: exception thrown during GuardedRun
[21:18:32] Run: exception thrown in GuardedRun -- Gromacs cannot continue further.
[21:18:32] Going to send back what have done -- stepsTotalG=10000000

[21:18:36] ... Done.
[21:18:37]
[21:18:37] Folding@home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE

Then it sent what it had done and started another project then got up to 16% and gave this error.
[02:07:03] Run: exception thrown during GuardedRun
[02:07:03] Run: exception thrown in GuardedRun -- Gromacs cannot continue further.

My specs are.

2.4ghz t8300
geforce 9500m gs
driver: 185.20 cuda driver
Vista 32bit

According to fahmon I should be able to get about 600 points per day with my gpu but it keeps giving me errors. I also notice that alot of games crash on my computer because the driver crashes and then ether recovers or not. If it does not recover the performance drops bigtime and makes most games unplayable. When it does recover a yellow triangle with a exclamation mark in it shows on the taskbar and I cant get rid of it until I reboot. The crashes during folding left that exclamation mark. every different forceware driver I have used has crashed. I think there is something wrong with my drivers. Can someone please help I only get about 200 points per day with the cpu client.

re: Folding @ Home II

Samurai, do you have anything overclocked? Also from your screen shot it looks like you are using the GPU console client, is that correct? and if you are I would trying using the GUI version just to test to see if its the program. I know I had the GUI version but my computer didn't like it and I had to change to the console version.

re: Folding @ Home II

I don't have anything over clocked and I am using the GUI version. I have overclocked my gpu in the past but not recently. My gpu gets between 83C and 86C when folding so I was wondering if it might be heat related.

re: Folding @ Home II

You're on a laptop right? I know my 9500 will throttle down it's clocks once it hits something like the high 80's Celsius while folding. Perhaps yours is doing the same. Once it does that it's most likely crashing because the gpu is corrupting something. So what I would do it prop the laptop up on two cd cases (non jewel ones) and try again with the better ventilation.

But if you have been playing with mobile non WHQL signed drivers from laptop video to go.com perhaps you grabbed one that needed it's inf file edited to support your 9500m gs. Or the whole driver supported or not is just not happy with your computer. Just a FYI.
