re: Folding @ Home II

I've recently set up a dual boot of Vista + Win7 on my PC and, trusting Win7's stability, installed both the CPU and GPU clients onto it. They both work great, but unfortunately their work is stored in a different directory to the existing clients on Vista (%appdata% for each OS). I'd like to make it so that they both work on the same units rather than having some for Vista and some for Win7.

At first I tried to change the shortcuts to point to the directory of the other OS, but the client didn't execute anything. Now I'm looking at the console clients and thinking of running the CPU one as a service on both OSes. Would that be possible, or would setting up one service override the other?

I have a desktop running as a file server doing nothing most of the time, so I decided that I'll use it to fold.

re: Folding @ Home II

I must say thanks to Courgan and everyone else on this page. For a while now I have been running the plain version of FAH. Now after I have read these post's I have realized that I can be doing more.

Yesterday I downloaded the version made for Nvidia GPU's and I must say that I am processing these units at a much faster rate. Taking the load off the CPU and putting on the GPU was more effective then I thought.

My only question is: How did Courgan get that display that tells him how many work units he has completed and his current rank?

re: Folding @ Home II

dazzle me you should be able to do around 89 points a day if Tekmosis' system is any indication. That's still enough to help the team!

RCM331 what is the name you're folding under?

I don't see your Neo name on the team results here:

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=53701

I'm finding that with those stats folding is alot more addictive.

re: Folding @ Home II

Minor update, I have the GPU console loading via the Startup folder on boot for both operating systems, and the CPU console installed as a service under Vista. When attempting to re-configure in 7 however:

quote
If you are seeing the following message even though a service is not installed
in this folder, you probably have conflicting machine IDs. Correct this and run
the configuration again.
Launch manually, remove the service in this directory (no/yes) [no]?
Looks like I'll have to run both consoles via the Startup folder in Windows 7. Bit annoying that there are two F@H icons on the taskbar, but there's plenty of room so not a problem. I heard that the GPU client doesn't play nicely with services so I'm staying away from that at the moment.

re: Folding @ Home II

My name under folding is Crowley331...but I have not yet added the Neoseeker Team Number yet...I have been busy with figuring things out with my move I have coming up in a few weeks.

But I will add the team number when I get done work today.

Also...I have noticed that when I overclock my GPU from it's original settings, I shave off about 25-30 minutes a unit. I also have the 10MB enabled, so I am receiving larger work units.

no it does not play well with the service but if you start all programs manually they co-exist fine

yep and the -advmethods flag increases your chances of getting larger files in the cpu and gpu modes
