re: Folding @ Home II

well when you put it like that, no. howeer, overclocking is perfectly safe, as long as you have the cooling power for it...and most computers can overclock safely by a little anyway.

why was this asked here?

I dont really understand the concept of all this. What's the point in it? What's it actually for?

I've got a good computer but I just dont understand...
to put it simply: each work unit is basicly a protien of the human gene.
what the folding program does is mimic the development process.
the reason behind this is to find cures for several diseases.the thought behind it is if they can find the source of the disease they can find a cure.
it can be explained better here complete with a video to demonstrate what it is and how it works.

re: Folding @ Home II

Well it has been awhile since I have ran FAH but I have had some issues. Mainly my 9800GX2 failed on me due to overheating So now I have a GTX 285 in my computer. and right off the bat the idle temp for the 285 is 15C less then the 9800GX2. So, needless to say, I am very happy. I was debating on getting the GTX 295 but honestly I didn't want to spend the money. So I am going to run FAH today and see the difference in time between the 2 cards. And I will let all of you know my findings in the next few days.

ahhh pity. hell i would have saved up for the 295, but im sure you can overclock it to achieve better results. good luck to you mate.

Keep an eye on the temps.
I have my gpu fan set for a minimum speed of 50%

re: Folding @ Home II

I had to go out to the store, so I left FAH runnig with the fan at 80% and depending on the WU the temps range from 55C to 68C. Which is about 10C-13C less then it was with my 9800GX2. Also I have noticed that all WU's are being completed at a faster rate, which is something that I figured would happen. So far I have seen 1% of a WU take 10 seconds less then before. When you talk about 10 seconds a percent over 100%, that starts to add up to some quick times

re: Folding @ Home II

Here is another little update...

Right now I am folding WU 5911, which takes awhile to complete a percentage. I left my card running normal and the range in time to complete a percentage was from 3 minutes 35 seconds to 4 minutes 12 seconds. I turned on overclocking, just to the Superclock speeds nothing higher, and the times are a lot more constant at 3 minutes 21 seconds to 3 minutes 29 seconds. Overclocking even just a little bit can go a long way.

Also these range of numbers are from a random 4% block of the WU. Just in case someone was wondering where these numbers came from.

Nice
Ihate the 5911 wu as they take close to 8 hrs on my 260gtx
until i get a better gpu cooler i am running stock speeds.the temps get too high for my taste at even a slight overclock on my card.
good to have you back.

It does take forever. The great thing is that before the overclock my temps were around 52C and after it only went to 55C-56C. Right now I am keeping my fan at 80% so it stays nice and cool.

re: Folding @ Home II

I'm about to get back into this. I have a replacement motherboard coming for my 3400+/HD3850 system, and a new PSU coming for my C2D/HD4870 system. My current PSU can't power the C2D/HD4870 in F@H for more than 30 seconds! It really puts a load on it.

I'm getting this 650w Corsair PSU. It's on it's way to my house as we speak.

Yeah. Last time I was folding with my HD3850 AGP and an 8800GTS 320MB. Now I'll have the 4870/C2D paired up Folding together.
