re: Folding @ Home II

Over the weekend I spent some time to actually OC my work 3800X2. It was always OC'd to 2.2 (from 2.0Ghz) but I bumped it up to 2.5GHz which actually gave me a pretty decent boost in PPD. Sadly, since mine is a very early stepping and I'm using stock cooling 2.5 is as high as I can go and still keep the system stable while running F@H and working:

Manchester X2 3800+ @ 2502MHz
Bus speed: 278MHz
HT: 3x
Multiplier: 9x
Vcore: +0.1V (1.37V total)

I've also engaged one of our 8800 GTS' part time to help me do some folding on my home system

re: Folding @ Home II

I wonder if it's possible to dedicate an entire core of a multi-core processor to F@H while still using the others for whatever else one wants to do? Does anybody know about that?

I have a Phenom quad-core and most apps these days don't know what to do with four cores, so being able to give away two of them full time to F@H until they're actually useful to gamers would rule.

Sadly, I probably wouldn't be participating in F@H for a long time because I have dial-up, but it's still interesting to know these things.

re: Folding @ Home II

it is possible...the best, and only way I know of, is setting the affinity.

If you go to task manager and go to the folding process that is running, you can right click on it and set the affinity...which is just setting what core you want the program to run on.

If you have a Quad core then you may want it to run on the higher cores 3 & 4. Since all programs will start to use the first core, which is 0 and then from 0 it starts to use 1, 2, 3.

Also I believe just because you have dial-up doesn't mean you can't participate. It will just take longer to send and recieve the units from the server. But you can opt to get the smaller work units. So it's something to look in to.

Yep. The small work units are under 5MB. The actual folding is done on the computer, your connection is only used to send back the results and fetch new assignments.

By the way, I need some help. I had it set to fold big units, but now I am going to try small ones. I tried changing my options and restarting F@H but it was still folding the same one. I then deleted all the files in the F@H folder except the ones you get when you download, so that no data or anything would be left. It continued to fold the same, big unit. How can I get a new one? I'm on Linux. (with the "command line" version)

re: Folding @ Home II

I had considered setting the affinity for certain cores as a possible solution but knowing absolutely nothing about F@H beyond its goal I wasn't sure if you had to install anything or how it worked.

If it doesn't have to send me hundreds of megs or several gigs worth of data at a time then I think it's worth it to give it a try.

Actualy...one thing that is nice is that when you send and receive new units, the program actualy compresses the work unit so that the file is not as big. Which is a big plus since you are using dial-up.

Have you tried unistalling the program? If you do that then re-install the console version and when it asks you just say NO for the larger files. Also it may/may not try completing that one work unit that has not gone away. If so just let it finish and then it will download a smaller work unit.

unless you change the workstation number it will continue to try to finish the unit you were working on.even with the uninstall and reinstall you will get the same unit back until it is finished or past the deadline.

So that's why!!! I noticed that, cause it did it to me, but wasn't sure why.

re: Folding @ Home II

I tried changing the machine ID to 2 and 3 instead of 1. I even wiped the work data in between those attempts. I keep getting "Mini chaperonin".

re: Folding @ Home II

but is it the same work unit number?
they run several under the same names and the only difference is the batch and clone numbers.Linux gets its own set the gpu gets one so does mac and windows.all different yet all the same names are changed for the coding of each set.

I think you should give it a shot and let us know how it goes. My guess is downloading a work unit takes maybe 1-5 minutes tops and uploading the result should be even less than that. The only time F@H talks to any servers is when it gets work units and when it sends back results, as far as I'm aware, so it won't slow down your net at all.

re: Folding @ Home II

I installed the console client again, and so far it seems to be working. I still dont like how I cant adjust the CPU percent it uses, hopefully they'll add that in a later update. I set all my fans to max, so my computer is noticeably louder, but so far my temperature alarm hasnt gone off.

I do the same thing to my video card. When I am not home I turn it to 100% and that keeps it in the 60's.

re: Folding @ Home II

all my case fans are at max, the fan in my tuniq is at 50% and the gpufan is at 39% been running 24/7 for almost a week now and no temp problems.
it is a shame that they do not have a gpu program for linux or the mac.

re: Folding @ Home II

I dont have a problem with my case fans running, I just have a really loud heatsink fan.

I'd like to see a better mac client period, or at least so I can set a CPU percentage it uses. It also dosnt help that I'm not running a native mac OS. This morning when I booted it up, F@H completely locked up my computer. Had to restart and disable it before it started running.
