ahhhh, it wasnt what i expected. it had a very mac-like look and feel. and besides, compatibility for linux is horrible when it comes to gaming. sure you can use WINE, but i find it silly. you basically have to wait until someone re codes it to support a new game, or one that is not yet supported, otherwise youre out of luck. basically, linux is not for gamers or digital media users...doesnt leave much eh? well, at least its free.

I am thinking of a tri boot (XP,7,Ubuntu) so that I have my compatibility, the fast Vista and develop some programming skills.

windows 7 already comes with an XP mode, so theres no point to having XP. thats about 3 or 4 gigs you can save.

I just realized this whole general discussion has mostly just been a large conversation between Hiigaran and Saransh Comsole. Its not much of a general discussion if its just two people chatting back and forth for whole pages. The supers generally dont like that and prefer that conversations be kept to PM. If there are 4+ people talking in here, then it would be fine, but 2-3 people generally isnt preferred.
I dont mean to kill your conversation, but when its just 2 people talking, its probably best to keep that to PM's. Wow, I just realized I left out an 's' in 'discussion' in the thread title... ------------------- quote TurMoiL911

I think it's worth it to download Ubuntu (i'm kinda bias as it took me only 8 - 10 minutes to download the 700MB during work hours).
Linux isn't for the faint hearted. It is more stable than Windows and you do have more power to do as you choose, however it's a pretty big learning curve than have to double-click or right click to do anything. Linux does have a GUI, but it's not as easy as Windows or Mac. If you're up to the challenge, then Linux can be fun. But imagine trying to install and use a printer on a Linux will take you longer to install than it would on a Windows machine. If you are a Windows person, Linux learning curve is pretty high (only reason is because you have to get yourself out of the Windows frame of mind). @Saransh - why do a tri-boot for? If you have the hardware or resource to support virtuals, why don't you run windows 7 as your native and install Linux, XP and Vista as their own virtuals. You won't have to reboot to use any of the OS since they are literally at your fingertips. ------------------- No gaming right now... my T42 video is toast (almost)... thats the thing. I don't have enough RAM to run virtuals. Just 2gb.

whats this now? Every time I reboot, all the startup items and services that I've unchecked in msconfig restore themselves to the early state. I was able to configure startup through CCleaner, but services are uncontrollable. And this Java Quick Starter is a pain in the rear.

nah, but i must lay down the law on you double posting. The Slayer shall do my bidding!
Slayer: YOU must lay down the double posting law? really though, the best thing to do when it comes to disabling startup entries is to first try disable the auto start from the program itself. usually, if you remove the value from a third party, or directly from the registry, then the next time you open up your programs, they will add themselves back in, as per their saved settings. try that first, then post the ones you cant get rid of, and how you tried to remove them. Yeah, me likes registry editing. but I don't suggest just go whacking any keys as that could seriously kill your system if you don't know what you are doing. It's usually the best way to clean up or remove actual items that you don't need.
Unfortunately, virii and spyware apps know this and disable task manager as well as registry editing when it installs itself. ------------------- No gaming right now... my T42 video is toast (almost)... I'm getting zig zaggy lines all over the place. Neo HTML Markup help

I deleted that double post.
Now, that msconfig problem was automatically solved, I dunno how, I did nothing at and it just solved upon the next reboot. But this time it is weirder. Normally, at the welcome screen, once I enter my password and hit ENTER, I was granted my usable desktop in about 2-3 secs. Then the AntiVir banner would come. The change now is that I hit ENTER, I have to wait for 20-25 secs, and then the AntiVir banner comes on the welcome screen itself. then the taskbar pops up(On the welcome screen). and I can go through the start menu and all. Then it freezes. And after a sec, all comes back to normal and all is set.And I'm like WTH? P.S. I have AntiVir and Spybot updated, and have run a full scan with them and had no detections. ??!!?!?! -------------------

see if you can disable the actual banner. i havent used antivir in a while now so i wouldnt know if there is an option. although i hate programs that bother you with banners on startup. i mean, piss off, we know youre there.
