well yeah, but they arent optimised for gaming. server boards tend to be better for cpu and memory intensive things, such as running a website. some server boards come with pci-e slots as well, but chances are that you will never use the amount of memory they are designed to support, or all the processing power that they have.
good for folding though and ive never flashed a bios so i wouldnt know. -------------------

The airflow is fine, but the thing is that the ambient temps are about 45-48 degrees.

quote hiigaranServer boards can be used for gaming. A server board can support a high powered video card which is mainly required for gaming. It's just that the server mobo is more expensive as it is mainly put together to allow for more RAM and CPUs than a home motherboard. Depending on how you want to look at it, a server board is basically a PC board on 'roids. I currently work with servers that support 2 or 4 sockets that each house 1 physical CPU. SO imagine 4x quad core CPUs. Also, there are 12 slots for RAm and each slot is rated to hold 8GB of RAM for a total of 96GB of RAM. I have not built a server with 96GB of RAM. The highest was 32GB of RAM and it was to run SQL Server with tons of databases in a cluster configuration. ------------------- No gaming right now... my T42 video is toast (almost)... yeah but you got to remember that its all overkill. how any games use all the processing power in one processor? another 3 processors, or even 1, wont exactly do much more for your gaming performance. youre better off with a rampage

True, but I was just saying that a server mobo can still be used for gaming. For the most part, people who host games usually would benefit best from server style mobos for the extra resources. As for individual users, a regular mobo will do the trick.

But I'll tell ya, I borrowed some equipment from my work a while back and hosted some games on it. The machine screamed but unfortunately my home internet was tapped and I lagged. So on top of a nice server machine; a very nice ISP connection (upload bandwidth) is desirable when it comes to hosting.

Awwww Player1 *hugs*
Even we (Canadians) don't have it that bad, usually. Sure, there are some (mostly distant/crappy hosting) game servers that have poor ping, but it is mostly under 200, and there are a fair number that are 100 or less. Pity I can't really play games when I run uTorrent (at least not when it starts getting over 30KBps or so). Start getting 'packet dropped' warnings from punkbuster ~_~ -------------------

hell, I played through three UT3 warfare events with a ping of 678.
That was a US server and I'm in India, almost the opposite. -------------------
