General Discusion IV

Like always, talk about anything and everything you want; computer related or not. Please try and keep larger computer threads (ie, computer builds, major trouble shooting, complex questions, ect) to a new thread. Simple questions like should I go with 2 or 4gb of ram, and simple hardware questions can go here. Please also try and keep general chatting of just 2 people down. Its ok if its just 2 people posting for half a page, but once it takes up a full page or more, then thats kinda bad.

Also, to comply with the rule that tells me to delete off topic general discussions, I'm going to go through in the next few days and delete most of the non-computer related posts from that GD.

i would assume that phasing out manufacturing methods would have a part to play as well. if RAM and GPU manufacturing is anything like mobo maufacturing, then it would seem about right.

Why not provide some simple services.
Some examples are: babysitting, car washes, walking the neighbor's dogs, lawn-mowing, etc...
If you are good with your neighbors, I'm sure some of them won't mind paying you some money for those services. Easy way to make a little extra money.

I don't like washing my car, and I am too lazy to take it to a car wash. i'm one of those people that would appreciate home service (someone coming by and providing these simple services) instead of having to go and do these items elsewhere.

Damn, I need a neighbor like you. Only one I can see paying for that. This nice old guy (Not saying your old lol) pays kids like $10 and giant candy bar to rake his yard. Not "$10 one time payment" but like, every day (for like 2 hours) he gives you $10. I did that one year but I think some kids started doing that. Not to mention it's summer and not fall.

And we have waaay too many car washes. Baby sitting maybe... plenty of kids, but most parents are like "Hey watch my kids while I go get some beer". I have redneck neighbors. Wait, mowing the lawn. Ha, I'll have to get my cheap dad to pay me to mow it.

Edit: About that laptop, that thing would be HOT. I have like, a cheap $400 Toshiba with like a 1.6GHz 1 core and it runs pretty hot. :\

Slayer, what exactly do you need as a device for your wireless printing?

I pretty much want to put the printer in a separate room that has no ethernet cable or computer in a near enough location to run any cable to it. I pretty much just need a wireless access point with a USB connection on it.

@hiigaran - it's not really a hardware thing with higher prices. It's more of an economy thing with the higher demand of any items that are being phased out. When it becomes harder to obtain due to low or non-existent manufacturing, then the item becomes more and more valuable (until the buyer decides that it's more worth it to buy the new item than to upgrade the old item).

@dogsbaby - I price my laziness accordingly. If I can pay someone else to do the around the house stuff, I would be more than happy to do that.

Just curious, how fast would a Intel Core i7 975 be if you underclocked it to room temperature WITHOUT a heatsink? heheh this question has been stuck in my head for weeks now

Ha, well I just remembered my grandparents usually give me like $30 on my birthday... I'll see if I can get a bit extra and I should have enough for a new monitor. Then I have to resave for a PC. That'll take a few months I'm sure, unless I find a job or some neighbor wants me to mow his lawn. Or if my dad will pay me to do stuff.

Look in the local newspaper for odd jobs. You'll be surprise what kind of simple services you can provide for quick money.

Are you asking how slow a i7 would have to run to be at room temperature with out a heatsink? It would probably have to run at just a few mhz. It would be near impossible to run any processor with out a heatsink, and not have it overheat.

Also, I requested to be a temp mod of the video cards forums to fix up some of the stickies. If anyone has any suggestions for the forum, or wants to add something, let me know in the next 2 weeks.

It was this "Imageshack Proudly Presents" thing that took over a few peoples signatures. It seems to be fine now though.

I'll check my newspaper then. I have some stuff I might sell on ebay or have a yard sale. Then see what I'm left with and what I'll buy.

I see that imageshack proudly presents thing in sigs till now.

yeah i know, its like milking it for every cent its worth, but that also plays a part in it i would think.
