re: Folding @ Home III |

I took a break yesterday, had all the rigs down. I started them up this afternoon again and now the client running on my ati card cant fetch any work again lol. The card is already slow and this is not helping matters any!
Hey Vermillion let me walk you through the GPU client setup. It seems like you had it going but are having problems so I'll try and set you up for success. 1. Create a folder in your Documents folder named something like 'Folding' 2. Nav to this link next: F@H You will want to DL the one with the Vista Orb Logo, it's the only one on that page. Just open it dont bother saving the .zip 3. Highlight the files contained in the .zip file and drag them into the 'Folding' folder you created in step 1. 4. Close the .zip file, and discard it. In the 'Folding' folder right click on the ****@****Win32-GPU application icon and send it to desktop via shortcut. Close this folder, and go to your desktop. 5. Right click on the shortcut you just created and rename it something you like, such as 'GPU'. Right click on the icon once again and go to properties. Now in the Target window insert at the end these three switches after a space: -forceasm - advmethods -configonly It should resemble this: "C:\Users\**your usr name**\Desktop\base_installs\folding\Folding@home-Win32-GPU.exe" -advmethods -forceasm -configonly (you can even copy that if need be and paste it in!) Now apply the change and click OK. 6. Now run the app and the window will start asking for your input. The only thing significant to the team is that you enter the team number: 53701 when needed and you keep the name you're already folding with so you don't have to start over. All the other options in the config relate to the options that you can set for your specific needs. Make sure to go through the advanced options when asked to. 7. Now when you reached the end of the config that window should have closed. You'll now have to jump back into the icon properties and remove the "-configonly" switch, and apply the change and click OK again. 8. Now you can run the program hopefully with no more headaches. You should be all set now to fold to your hearts content. Let us know if you succeeded in getting it to work!

It says "bad arguments" in the command window when I try to run it
Screenshot. This what it looks like in the Target property: C:\Users\Vermillion\Documents\Folding\Folding@home-Win32-GPU.exe -forceasm - advmethods -configonly EDIT: Oh, there's an space between the '-' and the 'advmethods' argument. Fixed it now.[color=#c6d0e7][size=1] -------------------

It seems it's working
How can I send it to where the clock is? I don't want it in the taskbar if I won't use it. Thanks a bunch for your help btw EDIT: Err, I have no idea if I am folding anything at all. First, I am having problems accessing the FAH site, and second, I see this line on the CMD every now and then: Folding@Home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE. Help? EDIT: Fine, reach EUE Limit again and stop for 24 hours to extend it for forever >>; -------------------

I believe it must stay in the taskbar as an application while it's running. Probably the only down side to the whole thing.
Is your video card overclocked at all?

I dont know what to say. The only thing left that I would try is to download evga precision overclocking tool from Guru3D and install it. With it you can then underclock your gpu 10MHz and up the memory & shader clock 15MHz, restart the pc and try folding with those settings.
That's what I had to do on my laptop to get it stable and to stop throwing guarded run and EUE error every 45mins to an hour.

I'm just waiting on confirmation from a buyer, but it looks like I'll be able to sell my 4850 and order myself a GTS 250 tonight for a little boost in PPD. Right now it's really not even worth folding on this thing, it's ridiculous.

quote ParanahJoejust wondering, would a gts250 fold faster than a 9600GSO 1gb version? -------------------

Yeah it's 96 vs 112 stream processors I think. I just bought this 5 minutes ago. My bro has the same one folding right now and fahmon reads avg 5.7-6.2k PPD factory OC clocks. When I get mine I'll OC it and see where it takes me.
I almost grabbed the gtx 260 1GB, but the power requirements under full system load was damn close to 500W with all the shit I have in my computer now. With this card I wont have a choice but to replace my psu next.

okay so stream processors affect the speed of folding more than the amount of memory the card has?

With nVidia yes. If Ati was the same, which they are not, my 4850 has 800 SP's. Many of which sit unused with F@H cause nothing is coded to use them.
