Laptop recommendations |
|
Hey all. I'm buying a new laptop soon and I was wondering which of these I should consider buying. Dell, Toshiba or HP? I'm leaning more towards Dell at the moment since it seems to be the most affordable for me, but I heard I'm better off buying an HP despite of it being more expensive.
By the way, I'm not looking for anything fancy. Just a computer I can use to do my homework and browse the net. Thanks.

I have a Dell inspiron and I absolutely love it. Don't believe the people that badmouth Dell (Come on Neoseekers, I know you're out there). They're great computers.

Sorry Quierta. I thought these forums were dead.
I forgot to mention. I also want the most reliable computer I can find. I can't be bothered to have to repair it every 6 months or so. -_-

I have two dell laptops, and they work miraculously. However, if you're going to get one, I would avoid getting the Dell Inspiron, they wanted to help better the battery life management by putting a motherboard on the battery, and as a result, the battery only lasts about a year.
It's a $150 battery. ------------------- aLmost Constant

Toshibia and HP are both good brands from my experience. Had a laptop from each of them for a year or so and both are great. I have no idea about Dell though.

Like the above from Dogsbaby, I've had both. In fact, the Toshiba I used lasted incredibly long, and is from when laptops were just coming out, when a gig of memory was amazing. It's still working just fine, if not a little on the slow side these days. =D
HP has excellent customer service, I got my computer repaired after a friend of mine was a little rough with it and dislodged several internal components. I had it back within the week, entirely repaired. I've found the computers to be reliable, if not a little lopsided in what they provide. My current HP laptop has 4 gigs of ram, but an absolutely crap video card. Unfortunately, with laptops your major sacrifice will be your graphics card. I've found the keyboards on HP laptops to fall apart a little easier than your average keyboards, they seem to be very lightly attached and come off (although I do tend to strike my keyboard like it had insulted my mother). Most of these forums aren't dead. You might get a lot of responses in Loungin', but the truly stellar responses typically are found in the quieter forums, and they are the ones most likely to help! =) My mother has worked with Dells and says that she doesn't like them as much as the HP computers the family has had in the past. She works in a lab so she's fairly computer literate, and finds most alternatives she has used to be better. ------------------- Can I run around and make veiled comments about others too?

My sister has had several problems with her Dell laptop. Not sure if they commonly have problems, but hers is blatantly quite shit. It BSoD'd after only a couple months of having it. Possibly a virus or something, but doesn't seem likely considering how conservative she is with technology. Now it has the problem of freezing approximately every 30 seconds. I think the problem may be overheating, but I'm not sure. If you aren't wearing pants, that thing burns your legs after only being on for 30 minutes or so.
Also, not sure how good the batteries are on other laptops, but she's had to by two new ones in the time span of around 3 years. -------------------

I'd go with either toshiba or HP, HP more so than toshiba. I find the overall build quality to be better and "sturdier" They're solid but not heavy solid... well some models are heavy but I hope you know what I mean.
What's your budget and Main uses for the laptop? You may be able to find a good one from Asus, Lenovo, or many of the other good brands for cheaper than you would find a dell or hp. ------------------- Classic Gamer's Society Current Game - Lufia II Rise of the Sinistrals

quote Subzer0alright, so youre not looking at gaming or anything then. plain and simple, no gaming, no nonsense...well in that case, just grab the cheapest laptop there is. a handy side effect of lower performance laptops is that battery life is better. forget brands altogether. base this on prices. quote The Slayer...and you just know that 1/3rd of that comes from me -------------------

Really, most laptops are pretty much built the same. Anything that happens software wise (windows messes up, virus, etc) is all from the user. The biggest differences between laptop brands would be how well it is built and what they look like.
I've had my HP laptop for almost 2 years now, and I carry it with me in my backpack a lot. Its been dropped, had a few pounds of books/papers on it and thrown around a bit and nothing has broken on it. ------------------- quote TurMoiL911

Thanks for all the responses fellas. They've been very helpful. One more question though. Is Acer a good laptop brand by any chance?
