I tried safe mode, but that doesnt work either. Still the black screen there. Any other ideas?

if you have a friend willing to help, take out your hard drive, put it in his/her computer, open up AVG from that hard drive, and restore the file from quarantine. if you are willing to do this, say so, and we will provide further details on what to do.

Thanks for the help, but on the windows website it says that i should get the xp cd and reinstall it.

well if you are willing to lose your data, then sure by all means, but if you dont want the inconvenience of having to recover all your data again, you can do what i said before.

then again, theres nothing better performance wise than a fresh installation of windows.

I can borrow an XP CD off a mate, but i dont know what the product key is. If i repair windows using the CD, will i still need the product key?

You won't need his product key for anything.

If it asks for a product key you'll need the one for your computer. If you purchased this as a prebuilt it should have the product key somewhere on it.

the product key is 25 numbers/letters in groups of 5. is your computer a pre-built system(dell, hp,ibm, etc) or a customer built? if its a pre-built system then the product key should be on the side or back of the case. you will need the product key for a repair or reinstall

on another forum i got told that i dont need the product key for a REPAIR.

what kind of computer do you have, pre-built or custom built? i know if you have a dell and use a dell install disc you dont need the key, it might be same for other manufactures. but if you have a custom built or use a retail or oem disc you need your product key
