3D marks mean much more than didly squat as long as you keep comparing 3Dmarks to 3Dmarks, and nothing else.

I still feel the best "benchmarks" are just running fraps and have it log your FPS while you play some games.

re: General Computer Hardware Questions

My friend has a slightly old WinXP machine that they wanted to get a performance boost out of, and having only 256Mb RAM that seemed the obvious choice.

Unfortunately the mobo only accepts PC2100 or PC2700 (DDR266/DDR333), in paired modules. There's current 2x128Mb PC2700, and I planned to add 2x256Mb PC2700. Here's where my problems began, nobody in UK seems to sell paired PC2700 modules anymore...

I see two ways out of this, either just buying 2x256Mb PC2700 of normal RAM and hope it works when paired, or 2x256Mb PC3200 paired. Will it just underclock the DDR400 RAM to 333Mhz? Or will it not understand it at all? =\

re: General Computer Hardware Questions

It will automatically set the SPD settings to the slowest stick of ram in the system, don't worry. Usually you can get completely un related sticks to pair up in dual channel. I actually had two of Tweakers 256mb sticks running in one channel together, and a stick of my old giel budget DDR400 512mb in another channel, worked fine. It's more flexable than some would think.

Ren: A very late thanks, went for 2x256Mb 2700 Unpaired.

What do you mean you "fixed" the crack? If you glued it you could have thrown the balance off and it is trying to spin in an oval instead of a circle.

You can open it up and see if there are any wires obstructing the rotation of the blades and clean off any dust that might be built up. You can also email the manufacturer and ask if the fans can be replaced, and what they recommend as a replacement. That is what I did when I replaced my fan.

Oh, yes, Glue will make a fan so off balance. I tried it on an old fan, it it made it so loud, it even vibrated the case.

If it is PCI it should work in any PCI slot.

re: General Computer Hardware Questions

Enter your BIOS and see what type of settings you have to play around with. You should be able to overclock to some degree if you can at least change the CPU, chipset, and RAM voltages, and be able to alter the FSB and possibly RAM timings/dividers.

If you are asking for a tutorial, there are many available. Make sure you go slow and check for stability before you get antsy and jump to large of a frequency gap.

I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to post this. But when you are sharing a file through a network. I can never find it. Help? Please.

You may want to try the Operating Systems & Software forum.
You might get an answer here, but you'd probably get it faster there.

re: General Computer Hardware Questions

I think the battery on my laptop is knackered, but the cheapest I can find a replacement one is £110 +VAt, so I want to make sure it is the battery before buying it.

It's been like this for quite a while now, one morning I was switching on my laptop as usual and smoke started pouring out of the back of it. Unplugged it etc. and left it for a little while. Since then the laptop has only switched on if it is plugged in, which is rather annoying as I can no longer use it on the train or if I want to move room I have to shutdown, unplug, then reboot when I've moved.

When I go to Control Panel > Power Supply is says the battery is "charging" (and the charging light constantly shows on the laptop itself) but also says "100%". Would the problem by any chance be something connecting the battery to the laptop, as I have removed the battery and I can see no physical damage to it.

The screens going and the power supply itself is playing up now... time for a new laptop me thinks

Smoke? started pouring out of the back of your laptop? I'm surprised it still works, or at least hasnt done any damage. take out the battery NOW, as it could actually melt causing further damage, or in rare cases catch on fire.

If smoke came out of the laptop, and the battery no longer works, then it is most likely the battery.
