OC Forum Announcements

Over the last few months or so there has been notable and numerous instances of double posting...and even triple and quad posting by newer members/regulars. This is discouraged pretty much in a straight-forward fashion in the site-wide rules.

quote Site-Wide Rule #5
Try not to double post! If you post additional identical replies/posts by mistake, please delete the duplicate replies by clicking the del link at the bottom of each. Where you need to add more information on to your original reply, click edit at the bottom of your post and add more to it, instead of clicking Reply and creating two replies.

Just so everybody is clear on things, I will explain this item a bit further.

The edit function allows you to edit any post that you have made in any forum on Neoseeker. There is a link to said function in each one of your posts. In the bottom right-hand corner of every post you make, you will see a series of links that are directly coordinated with that specific post. The edit function appears as follows:

Click on that when you need to add more to your post.

Acceptable forms of double posting IN THIS FORUM are as follows:

  • The posts are more than 24 hours apart and you are adding critical information to the topic to further enhance the discussion. Do not double post a one-liner or some other type of drab comment. If you are adding critical information to the topic and the posts are less than 24 hours apart, use the edit function. I really don't care how pertinent the info is...less than 24 hours = edit.

  • You are bumping a thread to the front page for further discussion/help/queries. Do not bump a thread that is still on the front page. Bumping something to the front page is permissible so long as you give reason for the bump in the "bump post". Bumping with:
    quote
    *bump*
is frowned upon. Adding critical information is a whole different story.

  • Triple+ posting is rarely allowed, but under certain circumstances it is permissible only when bumping with the aforementioned prerequisites. A post/question may go unanswered for months. During that time it is quite reasonable for an Unwashed Heathen to double/triple post to regain attention to the topic...so long as it conforms to the "Bumping" ideology aforementioned above.
Please conform to the following in regard to Members Triple+ posting:
    quote Master of the VG
If for some reason you really need to bump a topic and you already have the last post in it, it is permissible to delete your last post make a new one (effectively bumping your topic without). This is what you should do if you already bumped your topic once and nobody posted to it. There is no need for three posts in the row that say *bump* or c'mon, anybody?
Likewise, there is no need for a bump-post that says " *bump* ". The

  • Quad-Posting+ is unnecessary and will likely be merged regardless of the circumstance. If the above mentioned guidelines are followed, it would be more helpful to make a new thread containing your original thread's link, rather than quadruple+ posting. If you are in doubt, PM one of the resident Moderators.

  • Master of the VG and The Slayer will always be open to questions regarding anything any of the members have doubts about so don't hesitate to PM one of us.

This sums up pretty much everything that regards "double posting" and other types of "multiple postings". PMing one of the Moderators here about a foreseen discrepancy will likely prevent your messages from being merged. If you can not provide permissible reasons for a "merging of posts" to NOT take place in regard to a double post...it likely will happen anyways.

    User System Threads/Work-Logs:
Double posting shows itself as more than appropriate in some circumstances regarding work-logs. These circumstances will be taken on a case-by-case basis.
  • Members(in general) put a lot of work into their User System thread, and if they want to breach the rules on "double posting" for the sake of the continuity of their work log and the education of other Members, we'll turn our heads on the matter so long as this privilege is not abused. It may only take one instance of abuse for us to see a better policy in the making.

Any allowance or breach to these guidelines will/should be handled via PM on a case-by-case basis, set about by the member(s). A direct, knowledgeable disregard to any site-wide rules are a definite grounds for a ban at the Moderator(s') discretion.

    Thank you~

    re: OC Forum Announcements

I've only seen double posting done by only a few new members to this forum... All of us regulars use the edit feature and do everything else right. Wouldnt just sending them a PM about it work?

I guess I'm not seeing this as a big major problem like you guy's are... This side of neoseeker gets half its traffic from guests who come here asking questions, and usually dont know how this site works, so they double post not knowing about the edit button. I guess now they'll see this thread and stop, but still...

I do find it ironic that you create a thread about not double posting, but you double posted in it

Actually, the only member I've seen regularly double+ posting is [name removed], aside from a few double posts from other people who dont know better, or who are replying to an old thread..

This was going to be a "closed sticky", but after a bit of fore-thought I felt it may do some good in the future.

Yes, I double posted. Ignore that as this thread may be floated/unfloated as deemed necessary by the current/future moderating staff and double(+) posted in by said moderators.

This thread does not exist to supersede the "report" function, nor to replace the PM system. Having been an active member for almost 2 years, even I've noticed the increase of moderator merged messages.

Adhering to the simple rules beset before us will help everyone have a good time here and hopefully will encourage more posts.

Actually, it will be less posts since no one would be double posting any more

I still dont really see double posting as that big of a problem here. The only double posting I've seen is by [name removed]. I've seen a few guests double post, but thats because they cant edit their messages, and I've seen a few very new members (less then 15 posts) double posting because they havnt gotten used to this site yet.

I guess I just dont notice the double posting...

The same rules that apply to the regular members should apply to the moderators. You dont see the police speeding around just because their the police and they can (aside from an emergency).
A1~ The rules do apply. Except this is a Forum Announcement thread. There is nobody except Moderators that should be announcing things here so a double+ post is acceptable.

I removed the name of the member from your posts the purpose of the thread isn't to point fingers or to humiliate, it's to let members know about double posting. Sometimes it's acceptable and sometimes it's not.

Now just to clarify what double posting is (this may be something that a new member or a guest doesn't know) it is having two consecutive posts from the same person. Obviously you can post in a topic more than once as long as you aren't posting two times in a row.

Just thought I'd announce to everyone here that Neoseeker has some new servers afoot.

    quote Redemption
We are deploying 2 new webservers as well: Barracuda and Ascension (the latter is not online yet). Our good friends, the very beloved Defiant and Nova servers have been removed from service. Nova will earn its rightful retirement place, and defiant will be repurposed for non webserving tasks. Aeon is also undergoing something and I'm not sure how its role will change. More details will follow later. In total we have added 4 brand new servers and looking to fix or replace 2 older (but still very powerful servers), while taking 2 of the oldest servers out altogether.

    wohhhh...

I was just reading that and no wonder they had trouble.

They really could have made it faster on the CPU side by SMP clustering a couple or CPU's.

I only saw the specs for one cluster... and it was two single core CPU's...

A question to redy... Why don't you just SMP cluster a couple of quad core's together add a few gigs of ram, and raid together a few SCSI drives..

I kno wyou have the raid working and stuff.. but you could easily have less servers by simply having each server have more power.'...

re: OC Forum Announcements: New Sub-Forums

    New OC Sub-Forums!

In a PM a while back, I had mentioned one of my ideas to Redemption about adding an additional sub-forum along with Master of the VG's previous idea about a User System sub-forum.

The two ideas are possibly about to become a reality. One sub-forum for retail computers(Alienware, Acer, Dell...ect), and another sub-forum for the member's worklogs, the OC Showcase and the threads that we have been calling "User System Threads". Redemption had asked me to touch base with VG and come up with some presentable forum names to name the new forums. Master of the VG and myself have decided on "Retail PCs" for the one forum, but have decided to poll the OC forum to get some ideas for the "User System" sub-forum's name.

Ultimately, the name that gets proposed to Redemption is up to us, but with due regard to the popular opinion.

The reason "User Systems" have been somewhat put-off is that it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and it can kind of be confusing. Basically, it isn't all that presentable.

So, let's hear some ideas for the name of a prospective "User System" sub-forum.

My idea for the "user system" sub-forum is The Computer Lab.

    re: OC Forum Announcements

Why are we getting a retail pc subform? Most of the topics we have about retail pc's involve people having problems with them, or wanting to buy one.

The user systems forum is nice. I cant think of any names right now, but it needs to sound like the place where you come and post your worklog of your computer, so we dont get random people going there for help.

Right. It would give the other aspect of computer enthusiasm it's own home. All the troubleshooting, questions and discussion would have their own forum. And I plan to have a list of manufacturer websites offering driver updates & other information as well.

We're looking for name suggestions for the "User System" related sub-forum.
