Hype versus Hope |
|
Do you believe the hype that builds prior to a game's release? Some games go overboard, and others let the hype build itself. GTA 4 let the hype machines spin themselves into a frenzy, just dropping in teasers here and there to fuel it.
Is there a fine line between believing the hype and hoping that the game will be as good as it is billed to be? What game did you find was built up to be amazing and disappointed you the most? What game did you hear very little about and yet it surprised you the most? ------------------- Crawling, on the planet's face. Some insects, called the Human Race. I haven't listened to video game hype since 2004. As far as I'm concerned, waiting to play the "perfect" game advertised to you is only going to satisfy you until you find something wrong with it.

Assassins Creed surprised me. Halo 3 and GTA IV lived up to the hype in my opinion. I havnt played any disappointing games. I make sure I get good ones.

I never buy a game as soon as it comes out; I usually wait several months and wait to see the responses people make. If my friends enjoy playing it, or if I play it at their places and enjoy it then I'm likely to buy it. Because I wait so long I pretty much ignore most of the hype. That, and the fact that the advertising is pretty much exclusive for PS3/360 games nowadays anyway...

quote InvivnI Final Fantasy XII easily, it doesn't even feel like a Final Fantasy. Then, for example, you get MGS4. The hype has been huge, but rightly so - the game is class. ------------------- This day was long enough to fit a lifetime in The sun's down and I give up...

quote InvivnIHow can you say you haven't played any disappointing games yet? It says Assassins Creed for the first two words. ------------------- They've done it. It's dead.

Before I clicked on the thread title, I swear that I thought this was a discussion on Barack Hussein Obama's run for presidency.
I mean, so many games are overhyped nowadays. Halo 2 didn't live up to my expectations and neither did Halo 3. Don't get me wrong - I think that both are great games. It's just that no game, not even GTA IV, can fully live to the hype. It's the not-so-well-known games that crop up like hidden gems that are good. ------------------- ![]() I REFUSE TO CALL BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA II "PRESIDENT"

No game I've played has ever lived up to the hype.
GTAIV was a disappointment for me, whilst not really being a fan of the series, I gave it a chance and it left me thinking "People thought THIS was going to be one of the best games ever?" I agree with Dinosoid, the games that aren't hyped up tend to be the better ones. ------------------- "So what if it looks hopeless? If it were me I still wouldn't give up."

Most overhyped games series I have seen is Halo, they are average games at best imo, yet are treated like the gaming equivalent of Jesus.
Assasin's Creed was a dissappointment, but only in the sense that it was so hyped, as it really wasn't that bad a game. If MGS4 doesn't live up to the hype, I'm afraid Hideo Kojima will not live past June.

quote RVD1000Agreed. I've been waiting for this game for a while, and well.. Online wasn't a disappointment atall, I found it to be really good. I'll be getting my copy tomorrow Assassin's Creed was overhyped, as you said, the game itself wasn't bad. I found it to be horribly repetitive, but I thought it was one of those games that was good if you didn't own it, like you just played it at a friends' house or something. ------------------- "So what if it looks hopeless? If it were me I still wouldn't give up."
