This is but another one of those school based questions that would be better when asked online.
Since this forum is the most multi-cultural, it'd be best to ask here. Does the country that you live in or that you know well offer paid Maternity Leave to it's working women? Do you think that paid maternity leave is essential to the economy? Please make sure to state what country you live in. -------------------  | |

essential to the economy? o__O I guess it is bad for the economy if anything. Yes I think it is fair to give women maternity leave, after all they need to spend time with their new baby and figure out how the child is going to be looked after (ie get a baby sitter) without having to lose their job over it. ♥ -------------------  | |

But, does your country have it as compulsory, only some businesses instate it or not at all?

I believe it's compulsory in Canada, but I'm not 100% sure. I know that every job I've been to has had paid maternity leave. Even if it's not compulsory, I know that it's there, whether the mom wants to take it or not. (and yes, I know some people who don't take it)

Yeah is is compulsory by law, you can't sack someone for taking maternity leave, they are allowed to take a certain amount of time off although I'm not sure how long. ♥ ------------------- | |

I know my alleged Spanish teacher (alledged in that we had her for just under a term and we've had like five people taking our lessons since) went on maternity leave early last December, and we've been told she'll be back after Christmas, so I'm guessing it's around a year.

I thought it was 6 - 9 months. Someone recently told me that one couple was splitting their maternity leave, so instead of the mom having 6 months off, both parents took 3 months.

That's a bit silly since the baby gets fed by mummy boob not daddy boob. Dads get a certain amount of time off any way by law, although probably not that much. ♥ ------------------- | |
