My friend's computer is potentially being broken into

I was at my friend’s house today and her computer started making the sounds of the mouse being clicked, then after a while music started playing when no media player was running. I immediately opened processes up to see if anything suspicious was running, I found something running called “ProxyLogin.exe”, everything else seemed fine, I ended the process tree and everything returned back to normal, but 10 miniutes later it started again.

I’m not an expert on computers but I was thinking when the potential person attempts to connect again I open up cmd and use the netstat –n command to look at the traffic, and from their I can find an IP address. With this I can use this site to track it, then I’ll found out the ISP of the person, I ring them and complain about that particular address, they look into it, case resolved. However that’s just an idea, I don’t know if things run like this. However as he appears to be using a proxy the IP address of the proxy server will only show, not his/hers. What do you think I should do for my friend, she seems quite upset? Also sorry if this is in the wrong place, I couldn’t find a more fitting place to put it.

Have you (she) tried scanning for viruses and spyware and do you (she) have a firewall installed?

re: My friend's computer is potentially being broken into

There's this audio advertising thing that has been popping up on peoples computers. Ads and even music begin playing on people's computers with no pop-up to close. Maybe ending ProxyLogin.exe could stop it? Or maybe it's something entirely different.

But think about it, why would someone break into a persons computer just to play music?

re: My friend's computer is potentially being broken into

That’s something I’ll do tomorrow when I see her. I hope she isn’t a target, because an experienced cracker will be able to break through any system I secure. I’m going to switch her web browser, update her windows and upgrade the anti virus. Then have a look at which ports are open etc.

I don’t know. Maybe they are doing more things behind the scenes. I doubt it’s an advertisement as it would be advertising something. The only thing I can think of is to scare her. The only thing I can think why this is happening is to scare her.

Why would a advertisement agency pay someone to write a programme that does that, they aren’t profiting.

They're crafty. I wouldn't put anything past 'em.

Couldn't find any info on a program called "ProxyLogin.exe" so I don't think you are giving very clear facts. Either way tell her to stay away from porn sites.

re: My friend's computer is potentially being broken into

I once downloaded something and then some random guy started rapping (as in the music genre) on my computer o_o It was very odd but I uninstalled the program and it went away. Did your friend install anything recently?

Why wasn't her Windows updated in the first place?

Use Avast too.

I'd buy a new computer, then scan like 100 times to make sure the virus is gone for good. Also you get viruses when looking at porn so your friend is a dirt dirty man and you should not be his friend any more, unless you would like to be potentially raped.

re: My friend's computer is potentially being broken into

You never know till you've seen prove. Still, with gender changes and other hoopla going on today you can't be sure of anything. All we know is that there was porn looked up, and someone got infected because of it. Whoever did it is a nasty individual that can't be planning anything good.
