What makes me facepalm is whenever some dumb*bleep* asks if a checklane is open and persists on the question. No beating around the bush on this one, whomever said "the only stupid question is the one not asked" probably wasn't a cashier who hears that question multiple times on a daily basis, because THAT qualifies as an extremely stupid question.
People who talk on their cellphones through the checkouts will also make me facepalm because that is so rude to do. And to think that they don't know what the total is because they're lost in their own conversations. Great way to irritate the people waiting behind you in line.
And to complete the facepalm hat trick, it's one thing to ask for something to be put in a bag, but there are times where that request can be so wasteful it's pathetic. What I'm getting at are asking for bags for certain single-item purchases, like paper products (paper towels, toilet paper), that are pretty darn bulky to begin with. Why not just step up and carry them?
As bad as that sounds, it's even worse when people just take bags without even asking. That's stealing by its basic definition of unauthorized taking; whilst generally not worthwhile to pursue it doesn't exclude the principle of the act.
And the reason I facepalm over excessive bagging/unauthorized taking of plastic bags is because most of them wind up in landfills, where the environment gets damaged. The alternative would be to bring these excessive plastic bags to your grocery store, where they have bins for recycling plastic bags. I'm not sure about specific stores around the world, but here in the states certain towns have mandated plastic bag recycling in many of the stores.
