Thanksgiving

There are most likely Aussies that dont know what this is because most dont celebrate it. So, what is it, and what does it represent

re: Thanksgiving

Basically, the celebration of the Puritan's first harvest in the British colonial era of the US. I think. Something like that.

edit: I think Canada has a Thanksgiving date as well, but I don't know the history of that.

re: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, as far as my knowledge extends, was originally an American holiday. It's inception was brought about much how Hoa Dao mentioned. It was the first harvest after peace between the pilgrims and natives was reached and they all ate corn and turkeys and shit.

Actually, it was before the colonies rebelled against the British Monarchy, so I'd assume it's a British Holiday as well, which would mean it's also a Canadian holiday. Things tend to vary from country to country, but that's how it started.

It's modernized to a point where all it really represents is being thankful for whatever it is you're 'blessed' with in life. It's also an awesome excuse for all your shitty family to come over and make jokes about how you're bad with women and probably a closet homosexual. I love it.

re: Thanksgiving

No thanks giving over here in the UK. I think it's purely an American/Canadian thing. Of what I know of anyway, which isn't much really...

re: Thanksgiving

Ah, I'm sure it's only the colonies that celebrated. The Americas were unfamiliar territory to the colonists, so I would think that they had Thanksgiving because they weren't sure they were going to make it.

re: Thanksgiving

Yeah, the natives showed them how to cultivate corn and farm succesfully and it's what helped them survive. So they were all, "Shit indies, thanks guys. Really, we want to give you our thanks." and they all got drunk around a really big table made out of drift wood and Pocahontas' grandmother. You know, that Willow thing.

re: Thanksgiving

American Thanksgiving is based on pilgrims who gave thanks for surviving a harsh winter, whereas Canadian Thanksgiving celebrates a successful and bountiful harvest. I'm not sure if it's so much about that anymore... most people I know just give thanks for what they have, and not about some non existent harvest lol. The first Canadian Thanksgiving goes back even farther than the first American one iirc. Our Thanksgiving takes place on the second weekend of October. (:

Uhh no, I'm pretty sure it's just America and Canada that celebrate Thanksgiving, although other countries do have "Thanks for the Harvest" traditions.

It doesn't celebrate Pilgrims. I celebrates the same thing as yours, a bountiful harvest. It was just the Pilgrims who first celebrated it.
