I've heard about getting a bonus shine if you defeat the manta and have 5 hp left. Is this true because if it isn't somebody is busted!

The only Mario game that has a 121st anything is Mario Galaxy. You can Star #121 by getting 60 stars on a Mario file, then beating all 120 stars as Luigi, then get the 121st star.
