How does thee rock, Protoman? Let us count the ways.

Protoman does rock. If they ever make a Mega Man 9, they need to make Protoman playable. He can be unlocked in MM: Powered Up, but he was too hard to unlock in that game.

I was able to unlock him in Powered Up. It was indeed difficult to beat those 100 challenges, but playing as Protoman was worth it.

He's also playable in Power Battles/Fighters.

Yeah, and also Battle & Chase. But he was underwhelming in those games. It was nice to play as him in a side-scrolling, Megaman action style game.

What are these challenges like anyway?

They're hard. It's usually an obstacle course type thing. For example, Elec Man has these electric blocks which he moves by shooting at them. You have to go through levels filled with these blocks, with enemies coming at you from all sides, in addition to spikes being all over the place. That, and you only get one bar of life. So one hit and you're dead. It takes a lot of trial and error, and you need to perfect your technique.
