Is my GoW disk defective?

Just started playing GoW a week or so ago. I've been trying to kill the Hydra for at least a week. I know that when the O appears over the main hydra head, you hit the O and then continue to hit the button after both swords are in the Hydras head. The head is suppose to splinter the mast and break it after 3 times and then you can finally kill the Hydra. My problem is that each time I get to this point I have pulled the Hydra head to the mast 5 times and have never seen it splinter, let alone break. So the game has quickly gotten quite frustrating. I only got the PS2 about 3 weeks ago and the game about 2 weeks ago. Is this a glitch in the program? Seems strange if it is. Anyway to get around this outside of getting the disk exchanged? Am I suppose to do anything else besides just hitting the O button as fast as possible??? I have the problem both with the Logitech wireless controller and the wired controller than comes with the game.

re: Is my GoW disk defective?

Never heard of it happening before. Yes, you're supposed to tap O rapidly to smash his head against the mast. Each time it'll become incresing compromised until finally snapping in half the third time. Then you will need to deplete its health until the O appears again then engage in a short stabbing mini-game, then another tapping mini-game. That will impale its head on the mast (just recapping to make sure you did everything).

Maybe you need to mash the O button faster. If not, then I think your game is defective. No matter. A quick disc exchange is no big deal.

I don't think I can mash the button any faster than I am, so I guess I'll take it back to Target and exchange it.
