I'm a little worried that everyone is a mage in the sense that they can cast spells.

I'm trying to play a very mage-ish character, and have only been wearing robes. Do other mage players (class, and mage sign) wear armor and deal with limited spell effectiveness (or is this not an issue if you become skilled in certain armors)?

As a battlemage I wear heavy armor. Since this is one of my main skills the amount that it hinders me in the mage area is less. Plus since magic doesn't level with you as the creatures do it is less effective later on anyway. Also the amount that the spells that are effective costs in magicka later in the game is so extreme that I pretty much gave up on being a good mage.

I am also a battle mage. i used to wear heavy armour until i got me a Robe of Protection (or Robe of <whatever>....the robe i have gives me +15% shield...which is more than most UNCHANTED cuirass' and greaves. So until i get an enchanted cuirass and greaves which add up to more than 15% im sticking with me robe.

btw im lvl 12 and Arch-Mage of the mages guild.

Nope i don't really wear armor... i just wear my Black Hand robes of the Dark Brotherhood yet i have all these enchanted rings and bands and all that on so right now i think i am as powerful as if i did have armor on lol.

I completed the Dark Brotherhood quests, Fighter Guild quests, and the Theives guild quests. So, now I am doing the Mages guild. My character is a level 20, archer who is a master with the blade and expert with light armor. My current personal objective is to raise heavy armor skill and some magic skills. So, I am wearing a Daedric/Ebony combined heavy armor until I find a full Daedric set.

I have a question however. I just got my staff, and made it into the destruction school. Using the staff increases what skill? Destruction? OR something else?

its verry good in combination with a shield spell i have almost 90 defense with my spell, without i have 53 def.

I wear Umbra's armor. And boy oh boy am I slow.

Hell yeah, same here. I am a battlemage, but magick is not nearly strong enough to deal with all enemies in Oblivion, so I am also blade/heavy armor/block "primary skilled". However, with umbra on, I am slooooooooow as crap. Working on my attibutes though ,so it should increase

I now wear a combination of Umbra/Ebony and Dwarven. I have enchanted the umbra with +% Shield. in total i have about 85 shield. my blade skill is nothing special. 60 something...my conjuration is 100. Create spells to summon powerful creatures for long times. i summon Xivilai or Daedroths for like 100 seconds at a time. and they can kill pretty much all None boss-like peeps solo. If they are outnumbered or w/e i run in with Umbra or my Enchanted Elven longsword (30 frost dmg/15 shock dmg, both on strike.) and with my above defensive stats i tend not to take alot of dmg.

I gave up the heavy armor. Just wearing the latest Robe I was given.

Thing is, I am using the staff and NOT leveling up in destruction. However, I used the fireball spell a few times and leveled up in destruction like 3 times.

My next question is this: Where can I learn destruction?

J'Skar in the Bruma Mages Guild teaches low level Destruction, Marc Gulitte in the Anvil Mages Guilds handles medium level.
