Here are some of the articles that popped up concerning the game

September 24, 2004 - During Square Enix's conference at the Tokyo Game Show, a video was shown that included new footage from the recently announced Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Along with a collection of CG renders there was a brief glimpse, all of maybe ten seconds, which showed the game in action. The good news is that it looked solid and had a unique look to it. The other news, not necessarily bad, is that the game is looking to be a third-person shooter. Imagine that.

In the clip Vincent was running around with the camera behind him, shooting at various enemies. In another clip he had zoomed into a first-person mode for what looked like some sniper action. It was not clear whether or not Vincent is capable of moving while zoomed in for sniping. It was also not clear just what weapons aside from his trademark triple-barrel hand cannon he would be sporting. Like we said, the trailer was extremely brief and did not give away much in the way of gameplay.

What is clear from the footage and the accompanying screenshots is that the title is already looking sharp with its graphics. The game is set three years after the end of Final Fantasy VII the surroundings should be familiar to fans of that PSone classic. Other than that, the rest of the details of the game are yet to be revealed.

Interesting to say the least

I think that they've mistaken Vincent with Barret here... or else I've been playing the wrong game!

Actually, it's a double barrel shotgun, which is neither. At least that's what I've always seen it as.

EDIT: I have discovered that it actually three barreled

re: FFVII DoC Info thread

I've learned something about the story-line..

The enemies that Vincent is fighting, are apparently people who fled underground when news of the meteor hitting Midgar first appeared. They seem to be very technological, and for the most part, look very mutated. I'm thinking the life-stream must have had some effect on them, living underground and all..

UPDATE FOR FORUM (6TH OCTOBER 2004)

Here is a little information concerning all the various spin offs for final fantasy seven
taken from Gamespot.com

Although details on Square Enix's various Final Fantasy VII spin-off projects--collectively known as Compilation of Final Fantasy VII--have been available for a long time now, the company today released an official statement containing new and expanded information on the three projects.

The first of the three, the mobile phone RPG Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, officially launched today in Japan. The game has been in beta testing for nearly a month, and Square recently released information on the game's "materia synthesis" battle system, which uses the phone's digital camera and allows players to cooperate during gameplay.

While no international release of the game has been announced, Square Enix's statement notes that "releases in other territories are pending based on the regions' cellular handset technology."

Little new information was revealed about the direct-to-DVD movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, but Square Enix did tout the work's recent invitation to the Venice International Film Festival, in the new category of "Cinema Digitale." Festival director Marco Muller called Advent Children "one of the few movies to demonstrate the impressive talent of its young creators," praising its "cutting-edge cinematic innovations."

Finally, Square Enix revealed new storyline details on Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, the PlayStation 2 action title starring FFVII alum Vincent Valentine. The storyline summary that Square Enix provided is below; note that other characters from FFVII will "join" Vincent in his adventure.

"Dirge of Cerberus begins with the sudden appearance of a mysterious group raiding local towns. They are known as the Deep Ground Soldiers (DG Soldiers), a band of warriors driven to hide underground because of the disastrous meteor. Our hero, Vincent Valentine, is somehow connected with these events, yet in what way remains unclear. And when the world is veiled in darkness, it is his revolver that will ring out the dirge...But Vincent won't be alone--he'll be joined by other characters from Final Fantasy VII."

Finally, it is interesting to note that Square Enix considers Compilation of Final Fantasy VII to be the company's first steps toward what it termed at this year's E3 to be "polymorphic content." Square Enix defines this strategy as "providing well-known properties on several platforms, allowing exposure of the products to as wide an audience as possible."

FIRST IMPRESSIONS AT THE TOKYO GAME SHOW

TOKYO--At the Tokyo Game Show today, Square Enix unveiled the first footage of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, the third leg of a new movement the company has dubbed "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII." Made up by the upcoming CG film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the currently Japan-only mobile game Before Crisis - Final Fantasy VII, the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII will be completed with the addition of Dirge of Cerberus, which stars everyone's favorite undead dreamboat, Vincent. But with a genre that's thus far been listed as "TBA," just what kind of game is this?

Well, from the very brief video clip we saw at Square's press conference this morning at TGS, it's definitely an action game of some sort. There were certainly lots of guns, at least. Vincent was running and jumping and (from a third-person perspective) laying waste with a heavy machine gun, so it's not hard to imagine this is going to be a shooting-focused action game. The guy's got those wicked claws, too, so there could certainly be a melee component included as well. Just about the only hard fact we could glean from the trailer was that the game is set three years after the end of Final Fantasy VII, which would also place it sometime after Advent Children. Square Enix is being awfully mum with the details about the game, so we'll have to keep biting our nails for the time being.

Interestingly, Dirge of Cerberus looked to be somewhat divorced from the Final Fantasy VII milieu. Whereas a recent trailer for Advent Children revealed that damn near everybody from FFVII will make at least a cameo appearance in the film, we only noticed Cait Sith in the brief Dirge of Cerberus footage--and come to think of it, Cait Sith is just about the only character we didn't see in the Advent Children trailer. Something's fishy here. In any case, several new characters, and what appeared to be a new sort of enemy soldier, were featured in the footage, so it seems that Vincent's first starring role will take him away from his former companions and subject him to new places and faces that we haven't seen before, either. But then, we only glimpsed a few seconds' worth of disjointed clips from the game, which is itself still early in development, so who knows what familiar scenery or personae will pop up in the final product.

While the footage we saw today helped to demystify what kind of game Dirge of Cerberus will be (it's definitely not an RPG, or a puzzle game, or a dating sim…), many questions remain. What of Vincent's cohorts, such as Cloud and Tifa? How exactly is Cerberus, the mythical three-headed dog, involved in the storyline? Why does Cait Sith have that goofy grin, anyway? Vincent may cry (ahem) if we don't learn the answers soon, but it seems that Square Enix is content to make us wait, for now.

TOKYO--According to the upcoming issue of Weekly Jump magazine, Square Enix is developing a Final Fantasy VII spin-off that will feature ex-Turks gunman Vincent as the main character. The game, which was first hinted at in April, will be titled Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

The only information currently available on the game is that its story involves a mysterious group called the DGs attacking peaceful towns in the world. The game will take place one year after Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the CG movie that recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is slated for release next year on DVD and the PlayStation Portable's UMD format.

While Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII is slated for release on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, Square Enix lists the game's genre as "undetermined," which suggests that the game is still in the early stages of development. GameSpot will bring you more information on Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII as it becomes available.

re: FFVII DoC Info thread

If anyone is interested or wants to know, although im sure everyone has allready seen it, here is the really nice logo for the upcoming game

Some other info which sol posted in the forum

Only one Square Enix Project is more mysterious that Advent Children- Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Creberus. A trailer was shown at this year's Tokyo Game Show (TGS) which revealed a handful of details about the title. Not an RPG by any means, Dirge of Cerberus is an action game starring Final Fantasy VII's undead buttkicker, Vincent Valintine.

Taking place three years Final Fantasy VII,(which would put it about one year after Advent Children), Vincent finds himself sucked into a plot that involves the magical destruction of a town and a group of ruthless mercenaries called DG. The trailer emphasizes Vincent's havy use of various guns, which suggests DoC may play much like Devil May Cry. However, certain footage clearly shows a first-person view, so the exact nature of the gameplaycan't yet be confirmed.

No matter how it plays, Vincent will find himself battling all sorts of villans, as DoC looks fairly removed from the areas and characters of Final Fantasy VII. However, a few familiar faces will show up- Cait Sith, for exapmle. Hey, it's something, right? DoC is slated for release in 2005 for the Playstation 2 and PSP

re: FFVII: DoC Information thread

This is from Arcaida and Itani

new characters (and scenarios) are added continuously to the mobile phone-spiel Before Crisis - although most accept that it concerns with Dirge OF Cerberus a Gun Action play, referred to Nomura again on the fact that the category of the play is unknown so far and one will finally be surprised with security - some characters from Advent Children emerge in Dirge OF Cerberus, but the stories are not located really in connection with one another; Advent Children is the history of Cloud, Dirge OF Cerberus from Vincent, whereby both play in Midgar - apparently it goes partly also little into Dirge OF Cerberus around the Turks (particularly Vincent a ex-Turk is) or around some plans secretly held from Shinra - when the idea of Advent Children arose for the first time, Nomura thought only up to Advent Children and Before Crisis - Yoshinori Kitase plans more, than Nomura introduced itself, whereby the Compilation is to lead to a surprising conclusion According to Japanese Forenusern Nomura mentions in addition that FF7 Advent Children will appear probably not more this winter in Japan. Thus release of the DVD film seems probable in spring 2005.

re: FFVII: DoC Information thread

Can you believe it! New Information, thanks to Miller

quote gamespot.com
We had the opportunity today to sit down with Yoshinori Kitase at the Square Enix booth. Mr. Kitase's credits include serving as the producer for both Final Fantasy X and the upcoming Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and his current project is Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. While we didn't get very many concrete details about the game, we did get some insight into the ongoing development process of the title based on the cherished role-playing-game world.

The game's title, Dirge of Cerberus, comes from the name of Vincent's weapon. His gun was apparently one of the very first items of the game that was designed, and the unique three-barreled weapon is called Cerberus. Mr. Kitase professes to be a big fan of action gun games (he named Medal of Honor and Half-Life as favorites), which he cited as one of the reasons the development team decided to go with a gun combat game. However, he notes that the game isn't going to be merely an all-action game, which he says is boring, as a creator, to design. Instead, it's going to incorporate RPG elements and have a strong focus on storyline. Much like other recent Final Fantasy games, Dirge of Cerberus will feature voice-overs, and he mentioned that the voice actors (in Japanese, at least) will be kept constant through the properties in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.

The basic gameplay model is going to be that of a third-person shooter, and the team is currently working on refining traits, like response speed, in the game. Mr. Kitase said that one of the reasons the game wasn't shown at E3 was that the development team is still working on the "controllability" of the game. Specifically, the team is refining it. He did say the team would try to show the game at this year's Tokyo Game Show, however.

Mr. Kitase says he hopes existing Final Fantasy VII fans will be pleased with the game, which gives those fans a chance to experience what really happened to their favorite characters after the end of the original. When asked directly about which Final Fantasy VII characters would be appearing, he would only confirm those that have appeared so far in the promotional materials (like Cait Sith). However, he says the team's thinking of adding more characters, and it would like to put in some surprise encounters for players.

When asked about a possible release window, the answer was "as soon as possible." Kitase added that the team was working very hard on the game. We'll be sure to keep you updated with any additional news about Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII as it emerges, so keep watching GameSpot and this gamespace for more information

re: FFVII: DoC Information thread

Yay, thanks to Rajin for opening this. Now we can post some new info here and the RPG Info Man has what you need.

RPGFan.com:

quote
At a press conference in Tokyo today, Square Enix announced more details regarding its upcoming "gun" Action-RPG Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. For the newest installment of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the company is cooperating with J-Pop star Gackt. The singer will not only peform the game's main theme Redemption and another song titled Longing, but also appear in the game, playing the role of an important character. This character however will not be a virtual alter ego created by motion capturing, but rather the real Gackt filmed by a camera. The resulting movie will then combined with traditional CG scenes.

At today's press conference, Square Enix president Youichi Wada, the producer of Dirge of Cerberus and head of Square Enix's first production team Yoshinori Kitase, corporate executive director Shinji Hashimoto, and Gackt were present. Wada explained the "polymorphic content" concept behind the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, saying the company wanted to grant the wish for a sequel voiced by many fans, by bringing the Final Fantasy VII experience to various platforms, such as cellphones, movies and game consoles. Afterwards, producer Kitase took the stage, explaining that shooting games traditionally focused on action, while the story was merely an afterthought. With Dirge of Cerberus, however, he wanted to create a new-type of gun action game combining strong action elements with a Final Fantasy-class story, movie sequences, CG scenes and interesting characters.

The costume Gackt is wearing during his in-game appearance was designed by character designer Tetsuya Nomura. The popstar will also wear it during his concert tour Gackt Live Tour 2005 Diablos - Aien no Shi.

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII will be available in Japan on January 26th for 7,800 yen ($66.79 USD).
More to come.

If you are having trouble seeing the screen this site works best in full view (F11). Once you do that, you should be able to see everything - there is a silver taskbar on the left hand side near Vincent's boots, and it says "Story Characters System Download Info PV". Click on the PV and you can see the E3 trailer.

Someone posted it a while back in a larger view - it is probably in one of the threads in the forum - I'll have to look for it for you in case you are still having trouble...

EDIT: Here it is a direct link to a larger version of the E3 movie in case you can't get the official site to work.
