Did Family Guy Go Too Far? |
|
According to The Advocate Magine, a scene in The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire, which first aired on June 12th, 2005, has offended many AIDS groups. In the scene, Peter tells Cleveland that is wife Loretta cheated on him because he has a great talent of breaking bad news to people.
As usual, the scene then flashbacked to Peter with 3 others singing a song about AIDS like a Barbershop Quartet to a young man (who has the stereotypical "gay" goatee). The lyrics are: Peter: You have AIDS. Quartet: Yes, you have AIDS. Peter: I hate to tell you, boy, you have AIDS. Quartet: You got the AIDS. Peter: You may have caught it when you stuck that filthy needle in here. Quartet: Or maybe all that unprotected sex which we hear. Peter: It isn't clear Quartet But what we're certain of is that you have AIDS. Peter:Yes, you have AIDS. Not HIV Quartet: But full-blown AIDS. Be sure that you see that this is not HIV, but full blown AIDS. Not HIV, but full-blown AIDS. Barbershop Quarter Man: I'm sorry, I wish it was something less serious Quartet: But it's AIDS. You've got the AIDS. The FOX Television Network said that viewers of Family Guy should expect the shocking and sometimes "tasteless" humor. They argued that the point was to show how bad Peter was at breaking news to people, not to make fun or offend anyone with the horrible disease. Fox spokesman Steven Melnick said, "Over the years, Family Guy has skewered virtually every ethnic, religious, and social group. The audience that tunes into this series is well-aware of what to expect from the show: a subversive and sometimes shocking comedic view that occasionally skirts the borders of appropriateness. This scene is not a joke about HIV but rather Peter's ignorance and inability to convey bad news. Given the nature of this series as well as the well-established cluelessness of this particular character, the scene, while certainly abrasive, is not beyond the expectation of the Family Guy audience." Craig E. Thompson, the executive director of an AIDS project in Los Angeles said that the scene should be "socially unacceptable" to watch. He said that the scene was just as funny as singing about someone with cancer. He also said that the scene disgraces AIDS and "reinforces homiphoiba." Gene Copello, an AIDS Institute Director said that Family Guy acted irresponsibly by airing the scene. He said FOX should make an immediate apology to all the people living with HIV or AIDS. "There is nothing comical about a person lying in a hospital bed dying of AIDS or any other disease." Source: Here This information came from a NeoPortal

So, what do you think? Should Family Guy not have aired that scene. I personally, thought it was funny but then again I'd probably feel much differently if I did have HIV or AIDS.

I found the scene humourous, but at the same time I was thinking that they might have gone overboard with this one. AIDS has killed millions of people and continues to do so, it's more than just stereotypes and isn't a laughing matter, like in the Wish Upon a Weinstein episode, so I can see how people could have been offended.

I personally don't think that it was a "major" thing, I mean I can see how people can get upset, but if you've seen the various episodes of Family Guy, you can see that its been MADE to take the piss out of various different things, and it just so happened that that day, it was that particular disease.

I don't think it went to far. Though again unless you really have aids you can't tell how bad it is. You can think its not bad but if you actually have it it can seem much worse.

I also don't think that Family Guy went too far. If that was going too far then there should be hundreds of other things for Fox to apologize for that were way worse than that.

quote spyrofiroRight. And it's only a cartoon. not a Puplic Service annoucement bishes. Get real. Team America's song was 20 times worse as stated before. But If I had HIV or AIDS, I'd really think this over differently, allthough I've never seen the episode itself, I've seen the song online, but have no idea what the source was.
