i really need help on this. whenever i update my r4 and i switch it on it comes up blank and i can not access the games. I've tried and tried again but it doesn't work

There's no difference between flash carts for the DS Phat or the DS Lite. Any flash cart will work for either of them.

That's also my problem. R4 v1.18 is the first and only firmware i have installed, haven't tried any other yet.
I only get a loading screen with a black background on the upper screen and a complete blank on the lower screen. Need help too!  | |
