Best Skill to Have
|
So what skill is everyone starting with? I've just started my second character and I picked something other than fencing and I'm getting my arse kicked! And speaking of fencing the rapier is the best by far surely? There doesn't seem to be any benefit from using the Longsword or Cutlass.

Fencing. that is definitely most useful skill, as other skills like Navigation, Gunner and Medicine you can get by acquiring a Navigator or Gunner crew member (fairly easy to do) or getting items like herbal salves which extend your life just like the medicine skill does. the other skill, the Charm one, or whatever it is, is actually really useless. all its for is it just gets you favorable by the governor's daughters easier. but its actually VERY easy to get them to like you and ask you to dances the higher rank you get. once you become an Admiral or higher, pretty much every governor's daughter in every port that you're an Admiral in will want to dance with you almost every time you come. and it really isnt like they give you very valuable info or items either. they will just tell you where an outlaw is hiding at so you can bust him and collect the bounty, or they will give you an item that you probably could have gotten from a mysterious stranger for a pretty cheap price, depending on how much gold you have.
on the other hand, you will fight (fence) enemies A LOT. any time you board an enemy ship or the enemy boards yours, attack a town with less than 100 soldiers, capture an outlaw hiding in a bar, defeat an "annoying captain" pestering a barmaid, engage a notorious pirate's ship in a battle, engage the evil Baron's ship in a battle, and so on. so this is the most useful skill, IMO.
and, sadly, no. there isnt much difference in the different kinds of swords you use, at least, none that i saw. once you acquire the "balanced swords" item, all swords seem to attack the exact same speed. i've never lost a fight before, and have used all 3 swords several times each, and have found no real difference in them. the rapier may be only a little faster, but it doesnt change much. too bad you cant use a pistol in those fights!

Actually, there's a BIG difference. The Rapier is easily the faster blade out of all of them. The longsword is balanced, and the cutlass will block any attack, EVERYTIME YOU BLOCK. Try it with a rapier, and you'll STILL be stabbed. The pistol is used in the beginning of battle, and it lowers the enemy's health. The balanced swords... I think they are useless. Stick with Fencing skill, it's like the only way to play.

If you plan on playing the game through on easy without raising your class Navigation seems to be the best because the wind doesn't slow you down as much, and if you lose a duel on the first three difficulty levels you truly suck. After the first three dueling gets harder so the fencing ability becomes more important because on the hardest level you almost have to dodge their attack and counter attack to hit them or they'll hit you every time. The rapier is the best weapon because the cutlass is way too slow and the longsword just seems useless to me. The rapier has the speed to attack faster and speed becomes more and more important as the difficulty level goes up.

I did the gunner skill...cause you don't really need it cause duels are still easy on the hardest difficulty...

I would like to ask Shinobi Razor, are you playing a level past Journeyman, the ones without light up buttons... If you are, you are using a trainer. The Rapier is fast and will block about 80 % of the time. the Cutlass is slow and will block everything, the longsword is medium speed, but blocks every time (if you hit the button.) Also, Dancing gets extremely hard at Adventurer and beyond, unless you are a wizard. The Plain daughters will always ask to dance, the attractive ones will ask if you are a count (or above), and the Beautiful ones will ask if you are a baron. Also, if you are basing Medicine on the fact that you can get the salve and the herbs, for Fencing you could get the Balanced and Perfectly balanced sword set, as well as the Leather and Metal cuirasses and the Puffy/ Silk fencing shirts, which make you faster, and turn away some shots. The only reason you pick fencing is that you would suck at fencing otherwise. Pick a skill based on your strengths. If you are good at something, pick something else. No one cares what skill you pick, so if you ARE bad at fencing, like shinobi is, pick it. if you feel like you are relatively good at everything, pick Medicine, so you can be good at everything for longer

True, but I still prefer the defensive weaponry. Besides, cutlasses are fun. ^-^ Personally, I'd rather not be stabbed at all, lol
